a paint that will cover some rust spots on my chrome mufflers
« on: September 10, 2011, 06:35:40 PM »
I have some nice, solid mufflers that have surface rust on 20% of their
surfaces spotted all over on the chrome. The chrome that is on there is
good & I want to keep the original chrome & fill in on the rust spots
to where it supplements the chrome in those spots;so rather than rust
spots,it will look like chrome w/ maybe some high heat "chrome" paint
in the areas that are now spotty ?! The bike is a 72' CB350K4.
The mufflers are real solid & I want them to look better on my bike.
Has any one ever tried this & can you give me any detailed tips on the
Best way to make it look "professional"? What is the best coating I can
use,so that I won't have to re-coat them too often ? & the best match
for chrome ? I can't see completely covering over good, healthy chrome
& I don't mind if it looks just a little bit spotty.

                                                                                   Thanks

I use Duplicolor Chrome paint to seal minor rust spots.

It is not invisible. But for what you are describing, it should hide the existing rust unless you look closely.

It is a rattle can (spray bomb) but I don't use it that way. I shake well and then spray a bit into the cap, wait for a bit to let some of the solvent evaporate and then use a small, very fine paint brush to dab it onto the spots that need filling and sealing.

Good luck

Thank you  that sounds like a very good way to apply that Duplicolor chrome paint.
Is that high heat paint ?

I don't think you need to worry about high-temp paint back on the mufflers.  AFAIK, that's only really needed for things like headers.

I did the same on a weld/repair muffler, I cleaned off loose rust and then used 'Kurust' , not sure if available in USA or name of an equivalent, this stops further corrosion and gives a hard black surface, not perfect finish but certainly a good way to hide a repair.

Malcomb,
     I am going to look for that brand name in one of the local auto parts suppliers;
that sounds like an excellent product to keep rust from going too far + cover it
w/ a heat resistant protector. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

It is a chemical that reacts with the oxide (rust), not sure of its name, you could also look for Jenolite I believe that is similar. Just be aware it is not a magic cure but it will help you attack rust and enable the repair to be covered and give some more life to the treated item. In my muffler repair I also poured it inside to get to the inside surface at the same spot. As Gordon said heat shouldn't be a problem on a muffler it didn't seem to on mine.

Thank you Gordon & Malcomb. I like stock O.E. exhaust & I want to make them last
as long as possible & look somewhat decent in the process.I try my best to use the
cycle as full time transportation year-round.

There are many of these products available in US and Canada as you suggested at auto parts stores. Typically they advertise themselves as rust converters.  The description on the bottle will describe a process just like malcolm did. One that you may find over here is Naval Jelly. They are quite acidic so don't get them on your skin or in your eyes. Smell like rotten eggs. But they do work. Once treated and dried, the spot coating from these would form a good base for the chrome paint we were talking about before.

Before painting them try Wood Bleach. Now I have to say that I've never tried a muffler before. I'm not sure about getting it inside of one.

Wood bleach will completely get rid of the rust. The proper way is to really dilute it and work your way up. Wood Bleach comes in a powder sort of like laundry detergent.

You fill something up with water and then use a tablespoon or so of Wood Bleach. Not a lot. (try it on the back side first). You let it sit for (a couple hours, a day) depending on how bad the rust it. Rust gone.

Well, I finally got the muffler back from the welder & applied the Duplicolor "chrome" to the area that I felt needed alot of paint, like a large enough area so what I did was just spray painted an area on each muffler after masking off that area(about25% of each muffler)and just painted it.I like that chrome paint because it is shinier than any silver hi-heat paint that I have ever used !
I was wondering though;has any one ever had mufflers re-chromed after they have repaired them ? I wonder if I saved my $ how much would it cost for just standard chrome plating(not show chrome)to be done to two CB350 twin mufflers ? ?

                                                              THANKS

Do you know how much it would cost me to have both mufflers re-chromed(someday)
w/ just a basic chrome plating...just enough to protect them for life & look better than paint ?

The rust stop stuff has been around for years sold under names like rust reformer. The chrome paint works well if you can reduce the pits as small as possible and let the paint fill a small space.  One old school trick to save pipes an mufflers is to coat the inside with oil and burn it off by riding. It forms a crust inside the acids can;t get thru. People noticed in the old days cars that burned oil did not need new mufflers and pipes very often.

I run the Babe Thread, just some babe with no name. You may have a hard time finding a chromer to do your pipes. They don;t like used pipes since the stuff inside the pipes will pollute their chemicals. Some I am told will do it as the last thing they do when they are ready to change the chemicals.

Has some one heard of those reproduction mufflers that "toytuff" is getting from the U.K. ? does anyone know if they are double wall like the O.E. ?
They are for the 72' CB350K4 twin that I own.
