Tews, just saw your post...re rust removal from chrome....i used a process that worked really well compared to polishes/cleaners....first i bought some "never dull" and swabbed it on my rims and fenders, then i used a good grade (Heavy Duty) Reynolds Aluminum sheet that i bunched up lightly (for rims)-it countours nicely to the rim--- or folded for fenders, while the never dull was still wet, i began scrubbing---since aluminum is softer than chrome, no scratches and during the rubbing, aluminum oxide is released from aluminum that aids in cutting, the lubricity of the nver dull stuff helps and they came out well. I then cleaned them with a micro fiber towel to dry and polished with traditional chrome polish. I had tried all types of polishes before, even steel wool at 0000 grade caused chrome dulling. Coca cola, regular, not diet can be tried in lieu of the never dull too--the acid in the coke neutralizes the rust and the aluminum foil safely polishes.

Thanks strap. I will try that.

Made progress today as I got the engine in.

Unfortunately now that the frame is all blingin' the engine looks like I need to paint it. I will most likely remove it and paint. Installation didnt take me more then 10 min. Then I found out I need to send off my swing arm to get new bushings.

I posted in the what you do today thread but here is my progress.... Member mikeKato is stoping by tomorrow to help me get her upstairs and put back together.

Where to start..Polished the front forks, chrome ears, rear fender, chain gaurd.... Got the front end on, then the rear tire on... Wanted to see how she looked so far. Then decided I am not going to paint the engine and put it in and try to get her done in a few weeks at latest... I tore off the front end, rear tire, carried to the basement... Tried to mount the engine and could not get the bottom bolt on the left side in.... Then it was pointed out I need to remove the swing arm as I did not put the chain around it first................ Then called it a day.

You do not need to remove the swing arm.
Just take off the masterlink and put the chain on.

Do not get the O ring chain.
Iy requires special tools.

Just get a regular chain. It is totally reliable and easy to take on and off.
All of these young guys think they need an o ring chain. You don't.
With all of the modern chain lubes you spray them on ,and the next morning it is ready to ride. The lube goes inside the rollers and coagulates.

Mythbusters used aluminum foil and coca-cola to great success. It actually beat out chrome polish in their rusty bumper test.

I used wet aluminum foil.  It was amazing.  Just fold it up, get it wet and keep folding it until the foil is basically black and gone.  Then off to a new piece.  It works great on rust.  Never tried it with soda though.

What are you doing for a seat?

Depending on the length, I want to put a Daytona replica on it from Roc city. I have to wait til I get the tank back and then off to my friend to match the paint of the tank to the seat.

Looking good so far. On your fork ears what are you going to do with the little hole that the reflector light went into. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with it. I dont want to put them back on just might put a small starwars band aid on it for now :)

The refelectors go over the hole of the headlight bucket.  These chrome ears are not like the ones on my 750 where you have the little in the middle.

Tews - looks real good! Are you keeping the signals on? On a cafe?

Mcwill - to cover up a hole, consider a decorative license plate bolt, I used a chrome bullet shaped one on the holes in my polished triple tree [where the speedo bracket originally mounted]

Are you sure you don't want to paint the motor?  I doubt that I got my motor completely clean, and the paint may chip off, but I have a whole can of the high temp stuff if I ever need to touch it up.  After all, you are in Wisconsin and it's going to be forever before you ride every day.  Although I did ride a little today.

I really like your frame.  Things are coming along fine for you and I am watching the progress.

I know I had to take a look at it again in regard to the engine. I really do not want to remove the forks, wheels to take out the engine. I will decide soon though. The engine would make it pop some more. Ahh #$%*.. If I can get a buddy out here I will probably remove the engine and paint it. There is a heat wave here in WI this week. 40 degrees.

I plan to get new turn signals. cafe style ones.

Those turn signals are perfect.  One thing I noticed is that they have 3 wires and my signals have 2.  Since my lectrical skills are low, I had a moment of panic.  But I love them and I see them in my future.

wedoo, The 3 wire signals can be used as running lights in the front as well as turn signals (this was the stock setup on my '77). For rear signal applications or older bikes without front running lights you just don't use one of the wires.

Weedo, I ordered them today. I got dual filament series II for the front and the single filament for the rear. Danny hit it on the head with the explanation.

You might post how you hook it up, if you have the original wire colors.  As soon as I started to read Danny's reply it hit me.  Not a bad idea having a bit more light back there.

Thanks Johnie, the plan is to have her done next week. Putting her back together is actually going smooth minus the lower bolt through the frame and engine. Now I am waiting for my side covers and tank from Johnny5.  The frame is Bengal Silver with clear coat PC.

I will post how the hook up goes. I ordered both dual filament but didnt want the extra draw to the charging system so I called them and they changed out one order.
