1981 CB650 custom (bought and delivered)
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:57:14 PM »
http://pensacola.craigslist.org/mcy/2571467982.html  This popped up on CL and turned out to be right over in the next neighborhood.  I'm trying to get a look at it today or tomorrow.  Says he has the title...

Yep, '80 or '81 custom.  Typical Craigslist ad.  Seller doesn't know what the bike is and doesn't know (or doesn't want to divulge) the real reason the bike stopped running.  "Carbs died"? ::) ::)

I would offer no more than $250, maybe $300 because it has a title.

I love the 650's. Got 3 of them myself.  2 daily drivers, and 1 that is in works.

I would not go over $150.  Just bought another 1981 CB650 Custom, two weeks ago.  Rode it around the block, no major issues.  $275

Out of all the SOHC/4 bikes, its the 650 that brings lowest money.  So, don't overpay to start with.

I thought the same thing.  How exactly does a carb die?  I've only seen one set that wasn't fixable and that was because the main jet posts were completely eroded...  I'm thinking a $300 offer, these bikes are few and far between where I am.

I paid $300 for my 79 just a few months ago. Second owner in good condition other than it has sat since 98 so it needs all the usual stuff.

Well, it's mine.  $250 delivered to my house, I pick it up tomorrow.  I looked it over today.  Has title.  Doesn't look like anything is missing, motor free (didn't know it didn't have a kickstarter though, I put it in 5th gear and turned the rear wheel), no battery, no ignition key (gas cap/seat key there), throttle (carbs slides?) stuck, will need tires and seat cover.

Well, here it is.  Looks like original paint except for maybe the badges on the side covers?  Left cover is cracked as well...

You did alright!  Now go reward yourself with a beer! ;D

Seriously though:  Suggest going through all the mechanical before spending too much $$ on it.  Seen guys start buying seats, custom bars, $250 on tires, etc, and then find out the bike has seriously $$ engine problems.  Do the 3000 mile maintenance.  That will tell you if engine is in good shape or not.  If so.. keep on going!

Keep an eye on plugs.  CB650's jetted lean from factory to achieve higher MPG.  With the 4-1 header, might be even leaner yet.

Enjoy.

Yeah, compression test is first on the list.  No kickstarter and no ignition key is making that a pain in the a$$ though.  It's #4 in line at this point behind my 750, 550, and the kids' CT90.  At least it's out of the weather and in my garage now...
