My Drag Racing MENTOR made his last Run.
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:32:16 AM »
A long time ago, I sublet a shop off of this fellow. He and his buddy owned a rail together and raced. When I started racing he coached me and I quickly learned the ropes..
His name was Gary Hough and he was 66 yrs old. While making a run in a dragster Saturday afternoon, he went through the 1/8 mile traps at 218km..about 130mph.. and did not decellerate till he went off the far end of the track, ending in a rocky ravine, 300 ft to the side!

Cage remained mostly intact and he was breathing when they got him out and into an air ambulance, but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries the next morning.. :( At this point there are a lot of unaswered questions..

GodSPEED Gary, you will be missed..

Sad news indeed Frank, we also lost a driver at our local track last week as well, straight line racing is not as safe as a lot of people think. :(

Thoughts and prayers to Family and friends. :(

Very sad news Frank. I lost my mate Neil Kent at the Manx GP this year too. Goodness knows why he went back this year after finally winning it last year. But, there is some small comfort in the knowledge that he and Gary checked out doing something they loved and there will be precious few of us who will be able to say that come the day...I hope that thought eases the pain a little...

Frank I got that sad phone call Sunday from another mutual friend... God speed.   :(
FYI a couple of the Kelowna boys stopped by our TF pit at the Seattle race last month.
That mountain top drag strip is NOT a place one wants to have mechanical issues...
Back when I was up there ('95) and watched Gordy run off into the woods on his turbo bike (well that's how it looked from the starting line) we decided right then there was NO WAY we would run the funnycars side by side.
It sucks to lose your friends.

Robbie, I figured that you probably knew Gary..

There was a good service for him, there was no shortage of amusing stories told about him. There was a reception after, and a wake later that night, very well attended.. a lot of racers showed up.. I wore my top ten points hat from 83.. Gary sure helped me get that one..

He will be missed... RIP.. Gary Hough...
