Frame CB 550 - what is the difference????
« on: September 14, 2011, 01:16:20 AM »
Last year I had an excellent crash with my CB 550 K 1976 model. I got bent arms and my bike got a bent frame at the steering stem. Now I am searching for a used frame with the paperwork, so I can swop the engine and parts over to a straight frame and rebuild a bike. I was thinking, that a frame from CB 500 K model K0 and up, or CB 550 K0 and K1 would be the same as the 1976 model. Then I checked the parts list and the cross reference, and it turns out that the CB 550 K 1976 model has a different frame. Well, it is the same frame, but still it seems to have some differences, but I don't know what it is.

Anybody on this forum that would know what the difference is?
I still think any of these model would work, but I would like to know anyways.

And if anyone have a frame they don't need.... ;)

If memory serves me correctly, the only major difference is the rear foot-peg hanger off the rear of the frame (both sides).  I had one in my parts heap for a while, but swopped it for some 500 bits and bobs.

side stand is forward of the foot peg on the 500,the 550 later frame with the passenger pegs on loops is behind it,the early 550 frame is the same as a 500,the later 550 swing arm has one grease zerk in the middle of the pivot, the early ones and 500s have one each end of the main bolt, the right hand peg forgings are longer and the rear brake lever bush is in a different position on the later 550,i think the early frames steer better.
