CB500/550 Engine Removal - exhaust studs out???
« on: May 16, 2006, 03:25:38 PM »
Read a thread here about removing the exhaust studs on a 750 to more easily slide it out...I just took a CB550 engine out without removing them...very annoying...

My question is how well do the exhaust studs tolerate being removed??? I have stud pullers [or removers, whatever] but I am concerned about old studs taking some aluminium with them when they are removed...

Removed the exhaust studs on my 750F2 before taking the engine out - wasn't a problem, there seemed to be no sign of aluminium on them and they went back in no problem - all OK as I speak (write!).

To remove them, I merely threaded two nuts on the stud I was removing and spannered on the inside one - reverse procedure going back on... hope this helps... oh, and taking them off did make the engine removal soooo much easier!

Cheers, Phil

Just removed and reinstalled engine in my 74 550. Did not remove studs, just wrapped with masking tape. Removed breather cover and did not have any problems. Appeared to be more trouble (and danger) than it was worth.

Just did the same job.  Take the oil pan off to get her out easier.  Going back in is much easier.  Tape the studs to save your frame paint.  Lots of risk in removing the studs.

when I pulled my 500 motor I just took off the filter housing and rolled the motor out of the frame.  It wa a heavy sum-B though.
