1973 cb750 Resto/Mod**
« on: September 22, 2011, 07:53:08 PM »
   Hello all..
I started this project well over a year ago yet had some problems with on line painters and lost parts (tank and side panels). I decided to finish what I had started and collected some missing parts and have started reassembly.
I had a bunch of powder coating done and resealed the engine as it ran good and had low miles. I will post my progress so as to help others as I have benefited greatly from this forum. I took tons of pictures before disassemble, labeled and bagged everything. The problem I am having is I lost all of my early pictures (hard drive crash).
  Two questions.
Why are my foot pegs solid and not spring-loaded and what is this small bracket for? The parts page call it a washer, it goes on one of the center stand pivot pinch bolts.
I'm new to posting pictures....Click to enlarge?

That washer goes on the one of the bolts for the center stand mount.
The battery drain tube does through the extra hole.

I think the JDM bikes had solid foot pegs.

Whats a JDM bike?

A bike that was manufactured for the Japanese Domestic market rather than export.

The JDM bikes had a red "speed warning" light in the triple tree and would have all the warning labels in Japanese.
There's a few other minor differences.
It's possible that your bike, or at least parts of it, was imported from Japan. (Not by Honda, obviously.)
Most commonly by returning GI's back in the 70's.

That is so cool.
The triple tree does have a hole in the center between the gauges that I had never seen on a k2 before.
It was clearly made that way.
I actually picked up another one without the hole!
The title says 1973 but the Vin and all the parts I get are k2 and it has the early gauges and fork ears. I can post a picture tomorrow of the triple tree top.
Any other differences you might know about?

Thanks for your time.

It was common for bikes to get titled the next year back then so it's no surprise you have a K2 with a 73 title.
The serial number will tell you for sure what market the bike was built for.

Search the forum here for JDM or Japanese Domestic Market.
There's been several threads from people with similar bikes.
Many of the differences are noted there.
Mostly minor things like different reflectors, paint colors, kick stand, etc.

I was able to get out and work on the Honda today.
I installed the triple tree and the forks I rebuilt and polished.
I am using the later model triple tree for now because I got a great deal on a set of gauges. I will keep looking for an early set and switch it out, but for now I want to get this bike on the road.
New fork ears and seals.
I will post a picture of the original triple tree with the hole for the warning light that I found out from CycleRanger was used on the Domestic Market models.(thanks)

I disassembled the rear shocks to clean and polish.
I thought I would include the spring compressor I came up with.
Just another variation on what I have seen on the forum.

Did a painter actually "lose" your side panels and gas tank?
That is unacceptable.

If so please tell the forum members the name of the business. Thanks!!

Maybe they got sold for more than the paint job cost.

Great job so far!!!

If the guy doing my powder coating "loses" my tank I will be furious because it is a 1978 tank stock No dents!  And the inside was almost like new.

It went for 33 years and no one dented it - unbelievable.

I would sue for that tank. They would have to buy me a new re pop from Yamiya in Japan. $$$$

Thanks for the compliment on the project!

I actually did a write up on the painter when it happened.  The problem was it was all through eBay and so I felt it would be OK. He would ignore emails for weeks on end. After much exchange with the BBB of Kentucky he agree to return my parts. The parts he finally returned were not even close to what I had sent him! The side panels were junk.
I did find a replacement set.

I finally gave up. This was over a year ago and I just got interested again with the reassembly, and yes I'm still pissed!
PayPal did refund all of the monies I had paid.

Search Old Crow Customs in the "bad sellers".

Made some more progress today.

Installed new coils and ignition switch.

I thought I would test fit the tank and side panel set I bought awhile back. It was great inspiration to see the look that was coming together but I found a whole new problem.

With this bike being a K2 model I looked for a tank with the petcock on the right side. No problem.
What is a problem is the distance between the forward mounting points where it slides on the rubber mounts. It is about 3/8 of an inch wider than the other tank I have. It shifts side to side on the mounts in the front.

This set of tins was bought already painted and ready to install and have been in my attic for close to a year.

Any ideas?
Do I have the wrong rubber mounts?
The k2 mounts do have a different part number than the later ones.
Are they thicker to take up the space?

Here is a picture of the area in question on the tank that fits (petcock on the left). It is not the original tank. The original tank was rusted out and I threw it away long ago.

Thanks

I checked and his web page is down too. -GOOD!!

Another bully. Tries to blame others.
I have met his type before. Even when you try to have a clear agreement even in writing it does no good. Hopefully he will end up in prison. One of those corporate owned prisons.
