cb750 front brake/forks options
« on: September 14, 2011, 02:12:11 PM »
Ive been searching the forums but could do with a little advice, well, opinions really.

The front brake on my cb750f1 is rubbish. Caliper and master cylinder have been rebuilt and it has new braided hoses and new pads, but its not exactly confidence inspiring (ive put 300 miles on the pads so should be bedded in).

So, i have a few options. Fit another disc/caliper and a modern master cylinder.
Or
Find/fit a gl1000 front end.
Or
Fit complete modern front end.

I like the modern front idea, but ill ignore it for now.

What i want to ask you all is, is adding another brake a big upgrade? How would it compare to the braking of the gl1000 front end? GL1000 discs look smaller, but are the calipers better?
What about the goldwing forks, a worthwhile upgrade over stock?

If neither of these 2 options are that much better than stock then maybe ill look at option 3 over the winter.

Thanks.

There are alot of threads on this subject and there are different ways to go
You have covered them so I guess it depends on how much you want to do

My front end is a GL1000 with RC51 Honda rotors and 6 pot calipers
its a little on the over kill side but thats what I like

I have some GL1000 calipers that have been rebuilt if your interested with all new parts

Adding a second disc and caliper to your stock front end is probably the easiest way to improve the front brake. The stock master cylinder works quite well with this setup.
(Dang, that bike looks good Jim! :D)

Im digging into a front end project that will include 35mm Betor forks with all upgraded internals, thinned and drilled rotors, and two CP2696 Lockheed calipers. I will top it all off with stainless lines and a CBR 5/8" bore master cylinder, which puts the ratio right in the sweet spot according to the ratio chart on vintagebrake.com. If it works half as well as I think it will, I should be able to shed speed in a big damn hurry. Besides, it will look amazing!

i am running a full 76 gl1000 front end......................same brakes system as the 77-78 750F.and it rides great.
i am using a pair of dodge small block valve springs as preload spacers in the fork tubes.

interesting question.are the rc51 rotors a direct swap?

I'm interested in this as well, if the RC51s will bolt to my wheel and match up to my calipers, I'd way rather have the modern rotors.

I wish it were that easy but it wasn't

I had to make adapter plates and then new hangers for the calipers (Out of Titanium no less)
But again you wont find another front end set up like this one thats for sure............

gl1000 same brakes as 77-78 750...

Interesting, F2 front ends are far more common in the UK than the gl1000.

I did read about a caliper upgrade for those forks too.

I wonder if i could use a mix of F2 forks, F1 wheel, F2 calipers and goldwing discs.

Early gl1000 stuff isnt too common over here.

You could make the F2 F3 stuff work as well. You just need to see what adapters to make

I have a 78GS 750 with FZR600 rotors and Brembo gold line calipers from a Dukati
a little machining here and there and its a great set up

Thats sort of what i was thinking.

Maybe fitting more modern discs then making adapters to fit suitable calipers.
Ill have to gather some bits and see what happens.

What diameter are F2/3 forks? Same for GL1000 forks.

How do the yokes compare in offset and width? (F2/3 v gl1000)
