Need a pipe/jetting recommendations
« on: May 26, 2006, 08:45:41 PM »
My k5 needs a new exhaust, or at least a muffler (dented).  I am not confident that it is jetted correctly because it acts "fuel starved" at 4000rpm.  I figure that it is a good time to change both problems but I don't know how to match the pipe with the proper carb parts.  There is information about setting it up stock but not using aftermarket parts.  Unfortunately $800 for a set of NOS stock pipes is not realistic.  What I would like is some input on successful combinations for a 4-1/jetting change.  I would like to keep from breaking the bank but at the same time I don't want junk.  I'm new to carbs but I am willing to jump in but it sure would be nice to install the right carb setup the first time around.  If anyone has specific links for an exhaust that they know works well then please include it in your reply.

Thanks

Good time to think about it.
Pick an exhaust 1st.  Anything can be made to work.
Then see how she runs and work out the jetting and tuning from there.

There is no real answer to your question :o

Good luck, shop around.

Not having to guess was sort of the idea.  Surely there are others out there with a 750 who already went through this and now has a good exhaust/jetting combo.  I'm not trying to be original.  I want to copy what eventually worked for someone else.  A decent, but not crazy exhaust with the right jetting info.

Cowboy, It's been my experience that when it comes to jetting there's no shortcut.   I've had bikes of the same year, with nearly identical exhaust and air filters require different size main jets.  At best what you could get is a place to start and then still have to plug chop your way into a working set up.  It's not hard to change the main jets on the k5 and with right info up front you could have the bike jetted in an afternoon.  Slow speed jets can usually be worked around with the fuel air mixture screws and the needle height/ taper may not need to move if you're lucky. . .

There's a lot of info and links on here on how to do this right.   Pretty much everything I know about it I picked on this board or linked from this board.  In the end it's a simple, but potentially time consuming process.

Just my 2 cents

I can live with that.  So does anyone have a "place to start?"

Not that this will work with K5 necessarily.

1978 K8 - 4 into 2 Mac  exhaust
Pod Filters
138 main jets.   "Stock is 110"
runs like snot! ;D
