My less than impressive paint mock up. Opinions?
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:34:26 AM »
Im using everything at my disposal, which isnt much.  Ive copied a photo of my tank and tail into paint and this is what I have.  Any thoughts?  The primer is tan, but a friend suggested a light slate metallic blue to go along with the red.  The bike has red rims as seen in the second photo and a gloss black frame.  Any suggestions? Paint gurus? Artists?

I am no artist but the tank arrow thing is not working for me. Kind of distracts from the knee-handlebar dents etc.Racey bikes love stripes and or pinstripes. Lets see what others think though.

Agreed.  The pointy thing needs to follow the curve of the HB dents.  Also a highlight stripe in a contrasting color following the contours of the red sections.

If you are in need of a graphic tool but can't afford Photo Shop or any other licensed product you may want to give GIMP a try.  It's free.   It was developed for the Linux open source world but there is a Windows version available as well.

I agree, at least on that front pointy thing just behind the forward tank-dent.  I think it would work fine if the lines that formed the point were to follow the silhouette of the dent rather than just pointing straight up.  As for the colors, I have just one suggestion.  Go take a look a color wheel and see what contrasts with what.  A color wheel can be a really great asset when you're choosing paints for a multi color layout.

Gold metallic pinstripe, or silver, to match engine would really set it off between colors and under the clearcoat.  Agreed with above, curves and flowing stripes look more vintage also.

I always thought that style of tank looks good with some racing stripes...  maybe 1" stripe about 1/2" apart...off white.

Red tank to match the rims ?  After all, it is a Honda.  Gonna be a nice one.

Go get yourself some rubber rim strips.   As much as I like duct tape, I've seen it do strange things in a wheel.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Damn, thats pretty cool.  I like that the stripes are part of the honda wing.  Might have to incorporate some of that.  I like the idea of the color coordinated pin stripe using the colors from the engine.

If you like the strips and want to pay homage to Honda at the same time, try a Rising Sun theme.  A 550 Cafe' was done in the Rising Sun theme a few years back and it was outstanding.  Might do some searches and try and find it for inspiration.  Maybe someone will remember whose it was and post a picture.

You are ruining the lines of the tank with anything on the side.  IMHO
That is one of the sexiest tank and tail combos for our bikes.  Beautiful lines on it and any angular graphic takes away from it.   Keep it simple, either plain or with a racing stripe down the center.
Well you asked for opinions and that's mine.

Those wheels are pure "bike porn" BTW
