This one day I won't ever forget!  I clearly remember the fighter jets flying around WNY for a time after the attack happened.  They were worried that those crazy idiots might go after the Niagra Falls hydro plant.  Weird thing was the very next year '02 I was doing the EXACT same thing I was doing in '01 when it happened. :o

I remember being in school, working with 'slow learners" when it was announced ...
The kids were really upset, and I had tears in my eyes trying to calm them down,

Damn I how I hate terrorists, their supporters and people whom use said actions to
promote their agendas, like patriotism, nationalism and the advancement of newer
ways to kill people.

Things I will remember on 9/11/2011

1: That 19 ARMED Criminals went through the security at our airports because the government WE elected thought it was OK for idiots to man the airport security check points.

2: That repeated warnings of an eminent attack by a known group of terrorist, who had successfully attacked us in the past, went unheeded by elected officials. People who often get elected by telling us, "government is the "problem", then proving it by doing nothing.

3: That $40 billion a year was spent on intelligence gathering and this money was wasted chasing cold war rivals, while completely missing the very real threats.

4: That more Americans have died chasing the criminals who perpetrated this crime, and trillions of borrowed/unfunded money was spent for what will amount to nothing 10 years from now, besides our own problems managing this debt.

5: That a Lying, cheating SOB like Dick Cheney will reap millions in stock dividends from his management of no-bid contracts to Halliburton, while my 401K was pillaged by the Wall Street.

You remember the civilian deaths, I'll remember why it happened and why we are no safer today because people vote for the add on TV and not what the representative did in the past.

Thanks to a very heavy computer I needed to take home from work that morning I walked out of the twin towers about 20 minutes before the attack and hoofed it down to the ferry. I had to run to make the boat and settled myself outside on the back of the boat sitting on the floor with my gargantuan new monitor and slipped on my headphones to unwind after a long night of work. After about 10 minutes I scanned for cops and lit up a cigarette. Someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind and I turned expecting a cop to be there , but it was a messenger kid that I saw regularly on the boat. I slipped off my headphones and he said look and pointed up at the towers. I think you can fill in the rest of the story...

Fast forward 1 year... I attended the central park memorial they had with my then girlfriend of 6 months and I remember breaking down and sobbing thinking that the then current world was no place to raise children.

Fast forward 10 years to today and here I am, father of 2 married to my then girlfriend still trying to get a handle on why #$%* like this happens....

I was 20 at the time and finally was at Ft. Benning for OUST (One Station Unit Training), Infantry. Now I am 30 and I am watching the History channel. I have never before seen any of the 9/11 video... In basic training they kept us very closed off (base was on lockdown, no TV/radio, 1 phone call a week). By the time I got home they had stopped showing the film footage on TV...

NEVER forget ALL the ones lost because of that day. It doesn't matter your views on right or wrong of what happened due to actions that took place 10 years ago. What matters most is the love and support we show our fellow man in their times of need.

I was working on the site the week before but then left for a vacation.  The rest of the crew saw the whole thing happen while I was on a wilderness canoe trip in Canada and did not learn of it until a week after it happened.
The over the top media attention is a bit too much.  The tenth anniversary is just an arbitrary measurement and doesn't mean all that much to me so I am going out for a ride instead.  I remember it today just as well as I did a year ago or a month ago. I read an column by George Will today that was quite good.  He mentions that on the tenth anniversary of Pearl Harbor there was just a short paragraph in most papers.
I am a bit tired of being held hostage to 9/11 fear mongering and as a country we have paid far to high a price because of it.  Where is the mention the "other" victims of 9/11,  6000 American soldiers, 1200 allies,  1000's of seriously wounded, and over 100,000 dead Iraqi and Afgan civilians killed in wars sold to us on dubious claims?  The 4 trillion dollar cost has helped to demolish our economy. So who won?
Remembering and honoring the victims is fine and good  but we need to keep it in perspective.

Thanks for Doing this Thread Bobby.

I will never forget the events of that day, nor will I forget what we were doing. I was just amazed at all the people who dies that day and HOW they died. After hearing about and seeing the results of the 1st plane hitting the 1st tower and watching the rest of it unfold right before our eyes, I just could not believe what I was seeing. Mu heart went out to those who were lost AND to those who LOST them. we were just Stunned, to say the least. I still just can't imagine how it was to be there.

My wonderful girlfriend had her client contact and several others die that day.  Her father was across the street in meetings when it all went down.  Needless to say it is far more real for her then me.  So, I have spent the day hanging out with her while she tries to avoid all of the media coverage.

Personally, I think it's part of our national identity which makes it important but at the same time I am ready for us all to move on.    This country is full of most of the people I love and a way of life that I would die for but honestly unless anyone reading this has 14 trillion dollars laying around, we have bigger problems then terrorist.

I think that for most New Yorkers the new Freedom Tower and lovely Memorial will go a long way to moving forward. No one here will forget that day. It also proves that the City and it's people were not crippled by that day and the horror of it.
Hopefully, we can begin to address the other problems we face as a Nation. We can do anything we put our minds to and give our full attention.

As an outsider, ten years after, I think we all need perspective and yes I'm also held hostage by those events.

Not to derail the intent of this thread, after seeing some footage yesterday of the new tower construction, with the exception of a steel reinforced concrete core, the remainder of the new building appeared to be structural steel members. When in college, I spent four summers as a wire lather (we placed and secured the steel rods for reinforced concrete). Great pay, hard work and we worked on new buildings in the lower 20's in Manhatten.

I'm one of those who is surprised the original structures held up as long as they did. From what I have read, the shock of impact loosened the fire retardant covering on the steel. Not hard to believe at all given the physics involved. The heat finally degraded the steel and we all know what happened. If the new buildings are also structural steel, how are the new beams protected from similar exposure? Anyone know? Any iron workers among our membership?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I am not an Iron Worker, but I married an Iron workers daughter... ???

The main improvement is the type and thickness of the thermal protection (insulation) applied to the structural beams.  This treatment will further delay the weakening of the steel in a fire but cannot prevent failure in all conditions.

There are other design techniques applied to the new structure to modularize and allow loads to shift to undamaged sections should a section of the building be damaged.

I have not seen the structural description of the new building, and have assumed they are keeping the key elements secret for security. However I would guess the primary loads will be carried by the core of the building, not the exterior walls as the original towers did. I also suspect this core will be provided with significant fire and heat protection (concrete?) to allow more time for the occupants to escape and to provide protection for the stairwells. (Remember the original buildings stairwells where protected by drywall, which failed and blocked the escape passage from the floors above.)

That was my take as well. They seem to have abandoned the 'curtian' technique for the outer walls, considered inovative at the time, and it appears the core is now thick, steel reinforced concrete to protect the mechanicals and stairways.

Yes, those are the newer building techniques used in skyscraper design and construction- reinforced cores.
The trade centers were a unique design of their time that ultimately led to their demise in this case.
