Computer help
« on: September 15, 2011, 02:05:26 PM »
As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers.
I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over.

Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong ?
He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'

I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired,

'An, ID ten T error ? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'

Eric grinned .... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before ?

'No,' I replied.

'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'

So I wrote down:

ID10T

I used to like Eric, the little sh*t head!

It was the stupid computer people that made up the phrase "computer illiterate"

Mechanics do not call people that do not understand car engines mechanically illiterate.

I think computer people feel so powerless that any piece of information they have, that someone else does not have, makes them feel important.

Everyone that gets a computer needs help because they are one of the only machines that do not come with clear instructions.
If you give a person clear instructions even a monkey should be able to operate the device.

I once worked at Kinko's for 1.5 years in the graphics department, (worst job I ever had),and found out that kids do not know that much .
They know one small specific area thats all.

EXAMPLE: I saw two young people spend most of a afternoon on a computer at Kinko's (expensive) and finally I asked them if they need help.
They said they were trying to find an apartment.
This was before Craigslist.
I told them they could just get in their car and drive around and look for FOR RENT signs and it would be faster. The were very happy and said they did not think of that.
I told them of several rentals that I saw just in the area on my way to work.

I had a good computer teacher. He said "Don't forget to interface with reality."

On the flip side, as a 44 year old IT guy most end users will not read or listen to instructions given to them. There's a saying in the IT field, RTFM: Read the F****** manual!
Yes, we feel superior in some ways. The same way a guy that works on his bike might feel superior to someone that will not even try to replace a spark plug.

Hah. You would think that would be the case.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
