XL-ent acquisition!

1979 XL250s
It followed me home. Been looking for one for a while.
~95% stock intact. 
Noisy replacement supertrapp muffler, minimum rust elsewhere.
Needs carb rebuilt, tune-up, TLC, etc.
Can boldly go where no CB750 can follow!  :)
Anyone know where to find a shop manual online?

They were fun on/off road bikes, reliable as can be and enough low end torque for most any  trail rider. Nice find, was it riding on the rear wheel when it followed you ::)?...Larry

Yeah it jumped in the back of the truck.  ;D
I had an XL185s back in the 80's that I sold years ago and I've regretted it ever since.
With a little TLC this bike should be a suitable replacement.
I prefer the torque to the speed.
I don't need to fly through the air doing somersaults!

got one of them myself, great bikes. has yours got the original 23inch front wheel, my mates refer to it as my gyroscope, helps keep us old men upright.  ;D

Scunny, I also had the earlier 175 version of the 185, those extra 10cc seemed to help a bit.  I even had the 125 tricked out with Powroll cam, big bore and if my memory serves well(good luck with that) a stroker kit also. That little 125 could fly through the woods...Larry

I was so impressed, I went out and bought one myself...   ;D

1983 XL200R.  Showed up in my local Craigslist, so I went and bought it.  All stock.  2500 miles.  Guy's phone was ringing off the hook as I was standing chatting with him.

Oh, nice!  That muffler is probably worth what you paid for the whole bike! :)

Running great!  Got about 50 miles on it so far.  Sweet little machine.  Super light.  Very user friendly.  Drove it in to the office today.  Hopefully, it'll get about 70 ~ 75 mpg.  Should be a lot better than my 17 mpg Dakota.   ;D

Pretty soon, mine's going to need a new dual-sport rear tire to replace the nearly-worn-out MXer on the back...  I'll probably gear up a bit, too.  Make for a little more relaxed road riding.  Right now, it's geared to climb mountains, and there just ain't no need for that here in Flatland, FL.   ;D

Yeah, it's got the 23" front wheel.  It looks like the choice of tires for that is limited.  Bridgestone or Cheng Shin.   
I think I'll go with Bridgestone... ;)

Well I just got the shop manual from Helminc.
Even though I did find pdf's of the manual and parts list online the Helminc manual is totally worth it.
It combines the shop manual and the parts list.

Wait a minute, what the hell?!!
I have to remove the crank case side cover to change the oil!!?! (to access the oil screen)
WTF Honda! >:(

Also, I thought part of the rear fender was missing under the seat but apparently the underside of the seat is part of the rear fender!

So here we are ~6 months later.
The only thing outstanding is reinstalling the skid plate.
I'm waiting on the rear mounting pieces from CMSNL.
That "TLC" I mentioned when I got this turned out to be  a lot of "T$L$C". ::)
You can't really tell from the pix but the bike was torn down and the frame powdercoated.
I installed XR gators 'cause I like gators. ;D

A mate of mine had one of the 185's, that thing was crazy, there was no way to take off without lifting the front wheel, I'm sure he had helium in the tyre.

Yeah I had an '82 XL185. I really wish I had never sold it. It was a great bike.
I think this bike will be fun too but it needed a lot more work than it appeared when I bought it...
