sheet metal seat pattern.
« on: May 10, 2006, 09:19:08 PM »
I was looking at a bike mag when I noticed that the cool aluminum seats with the bum stop hat you see are made from a simple sheet metal pattern. Anyone here have one cause if you don't I'm gonna make one and post it here.

Ok so I tried a pattern last night. I made a miscut on it and made another pattern this afternoon. I need to refine it but I think I am on to some thing. Here is what I have.  Any metal shapers out there?

Someone's been eating WAY too many donuts.

Seriously - that isn't to scale, is it....  :o ?  Or are you an aspiring drag racer, and want to forgoe the traditional fabric drag-chute?

For a better idea of appropriate bum-stop scale, have a look at some CR750 pics on the web, or this:

I had the idea to make a new pan, but this time, cover my rear fairing at the same time, that way it would be a one peice seat and fairing. would anyone be intrested?

Well, I don't know how this is going to work but, here goes. If I can leave a link, check it out . If I can't, I hope some will do it manually and still check this seat out. I know it's on a Yamaha site on XS650
Give it a chance, there's alot of good ideas, I think.

That's very simular to what I am dong with my seat. I never would have thought of using a gas tank like that.

pretty good idea.  I've actually thought about taking a mold of the rear tank section and glassing it onto to the stock seat pan.

That's a pretty cool approach to building a seat. It's interesting to me to see all the different ways that guys have come up with to build their seat. You could almost devote a section just on seat building, don't ya think? Keep up the good work and we want to see more. Later on, Bill

Great ideas!  I'm in the middle of building a custom seat pan as well - it will be lower than stock and very close to the frame on the sides but without the cafe "hump" at the back because I often carry a passenger.  I am using 1.5" aluminium strips and bending them to shape and then rivetting them into a framework.  Photos to come at the end of the weekend when it should be ready (hopefully!) to get upholstered.

Adam that is a good Idea. I have an extra tail fairing. Mostly I was thinking that somewhere there is a sheetmetal guy out there with a pattern for a classic style seat. It is pretty simple and if I can get access to a planishing setup I thinkI could turn one out fairly easily. You wouldn't happen to have a 78 SS left sidecover in maroon would you?

That should be and easy running on the planishing hammer, however there is a pile of shrinking on that pattern to get it right. At first it does look a bit large  but once you have your first radius on the top you can run it on a planishing hammer to smooth it and then shrink it in the middle on top.

Of course, I make this all sound simple.

You can also do this with a hammer and a shot bag for the most part.

those photos were just a thought process for the sheet metal pattern. Always  make it large 'cause you can always cut it down. Which I did  I took the hammer to my first pattern to see what it will look like after a few smacks with a hammer onthe dished out stump I will get some pics up today  I figure a 3 foot square hunk of .050 aluminum would be plenty ot make a complete seat. I have to go get the aluminum now. Anyone make a planisher from an air hammer? I have some links but I am mainly thinking that a modified mushroom head for an air hammer  in the shot bag would accomplish this forme. I' ll have to give it a try

The other option that a few people have tried is using one end of a scrap gas tank to form the rounded end of the seat.
