Good thing I wasn't on my bike ...
« on: May 11, 2006, 04:12:14 AM »
Had a little problem on my commute to work last Friday. I was sitting at a red light, when a driver in a Chevy pickup slams into the back of my Mustang. It seems he's a diabetic, and was a little low on sugar. He never touched his brakes. The impact spun my car around, and I broke the seat back, ending up lying almost flat, looking up a the roof, wondering what the heck just happened. I got a few stitches in my scalp, and a sore back, but I'm OK. I bought this '87 5.0 new in 1987, and took great care of it. It was a daily driver, with 185,000 miles on it. Gonna miss it.
This is the same route I take when I ride the K0 to work. We can only imagine what the outcome would have been if I'd been on the bike.

Richard, glad you're okay!  The same thing happened to a good friend a couple of years ago.  He was sitting at a light in his Toyota station wagon and a pick-up slammed into the back of him (why is it always a truck?).  The front end of the truck ended up resting on the back of the driver's seat!

Ever since then if I'm on my bike and the last vehicle in line at a red light, I keep the bike in 1st gear and my eyes on the mirror so I can get out of the way if I see someone not stopping fast enough.

Sorry about the Mustang, though, but really glad you're still here to tell us about it!

Richard,

Glad you weren't on the 750 also for your sake. Glad also that you came out of it more or less OK since it could have been much worse. Heal fast. A shame about the car, I can only imagine how you feel.

This saved my butt years ago when I was a kid on my CB175. Turning off a highway, stopped for an approaching car, an old GTO coming up on me at about 60. Dumped the clutch and hit the ditch. It was so close it makes me shake 30 years later. Anyway, sorry about the car, but I'm glad you're gonna be OK!

Nationwide declared it a total loss. I get $2100, they get the title.

Man, that's terrible!  I hope you still gave the driver of the truck a ration of sh*t..  No matter what his condition is, there is no excuse for slamming in to the back of someone's car..  If he was a little low on sugar, why the hell was he behind the wheel!  Imagine if there woulda been kids in the back seat of your mustang!

A guy I worked with had a suped up 5.0 Mustang LX, and the same thing happened to him.  He bought it back from the insurance company, and rebuilt the car.

Glad you're ok.

More than 2100 in parts left on that.............
    Glad you are OK
     I had a similar incident @ 10 yrs ago,
stopped at a light, saw this dump truck
coming, and I drove up on the sidewalk,
he put the car I was behind right thru the intersection,
                I was really lucky.........Now
I always leave @ 1/2-1 length in front, and in gear...
        just in case......
              Hang in there

this reminds me,in the late 80`s i was riding my dads sportster to work one morning, the road was a little bit wet.i had to try to stop for traffic on a 2 way street.well of course the #$%*ty sportster rear drum brake locked up on me,so i chose to flattrack thru the ditch.there happend to be a big straight truck behind me.all i heard was squealing brakes and then a crash as the truck hit the guy that was in front of me.i could imagine him watching me go thru the ditch and wasnt paying attention to what was in front of him.i hope no one was hurt because i laughed my ass off at that one.

Wow, that sounds like a pretty close one. It does pay to have more than half a car of crushable metal behind you; hope you're all healed up quickly.
It's pretty scary to imagine what you and your bike would look like if you had been 2 wheeling it.
I'm also sad to hear about your 'Stang, but make sure to flash around some pics of your new one; I still have to give one a testdrive!

This mention of leaving space reminds me of two things I recall from Driver Ed. back in high school (yes, cars had been invented by then  ;D) and I still do them. When sitting at a light to make a left turn always keep your front wheels straight ahead. If you are hit from behind, you won't be driven into on-coming traffic and the second is leave 8-10 feet between yourself and the car ahead at a stop so you can get out, or around. Funny how these little things stick with you.

Glad you're here to tell the tale!
I think you fared better than me insurance-wise. In '93 I slid my '85 Mustang GT sideways through a barbed wire fence into a pasture ("COWS!" my friend yelled  :o ) and suffered a couple of small dents and a bunch of scratches on the top and rt side. After getting towed out, I drove it home. Insurance totalled it. It had about 80K on it and only about 20K on the motor. I did manage to keep it - some deal about salvage rights, I can't remember for sure. They were going to give me $2700 if it was totalled but ended up giving me $1700 with the salvage. I fixed it for less than $500 and drove it for another 6 years.

Glad you're ok. It would have been more fitting if the truck burst into flames. I am a Ford man myself. I had a buddy killed years ago that was sitting at a light and a drunk driver pumled him at about 50mph while he was on his bike.

In 2004...right after the hurricanes I was hit from behind by a guy on his
cell phone. Funny thing was...he was an insurance adjuster....cop said he
should know better.  Anyway, I was in a middle lane and had no chance
to maneuver.  I did get out at least three AH S**T's though.. :o..before
he knocked me into the car in front of me...at least 15 feet away.

Bent the Lexus similar but not quite as bad as the Mustang above.  In Fla., if
the cost to repair is over 80 percent of the wholesale value of the car it then
carries a "destruction" title and is good for parts only. In my case the cost was
75 percent which was over the 70 percent that made the Hartford total it.  I
surrendered the title to them and they then applied for a "salvage" title. Then
in turn they sold me the salvage title for a hundred bucks. After repairs by my
body shop...good friend...the car now carries a "salvage rebuilt" title.

I'm not sure I would go through the hassle again.  Labor has gotten so expensive
cars and bikes are being totaled that are not all that damaged.  I saw a 2005 CBR600 on
ebay last week that had almost no damage...a few scratches...but was a stolen
recovery, that carried a destruction title....parts only.  Maybe they didn't want the
liability risk.  I was tempted to bid as it was local but my experience with the local
DMV made be choose not to.  ::)

Two bikes is not enough ... right?  ;D
