I've got an 80 CB650 with the PD carbs.  Bike ran like crap until I got it to stock with airbox, filter, carb sync, and proper jetting.  First time I took her out the front tire about came up!  I've had her to the ton a couple of times and she still had more left in her.  I just didn't want to push it any further.

So will a cb650 go fast?  Yup.  They just have to be set up right.

Acually TT is wrong.
Ain't me babe.  It's you calling Motorcyclist Magazine a liar.

the 79 ran the 1/4 mile in 12.99 so goes a old report.  And honda claimed 63 hp.
Where, at the Crankshaft? ...or the Rear wheel where it is actually measurable?

In 80 with the style change and gearing they slowed to 13.3.
Maybe Motorcyclist mag didn't use sea level on a cold day, a 90# pro-rider, and a Dyno calibrated in the bike's favor?

Reminds me of the old "Magazine Wars", competing for advertising dollars.  ::)

Cycle (jan 79) test of the 79 shows 12.99.   And they do show 50 hp at the rear.  I'm sure honda did it at the crank. So I'm sure it is more than 50. There is a lo po version that went to germany. Had a smaller profile cam in it.   And it is referred to as a 50hp cam. Also said the latter models did run slower.  Have a Motorcyclist (feb 82) testing the nitehawk and it runs 13.29.  It was generally the worst performer of all the bikes they listed.  I did also state I didnt believe the numbers but was stating what is written.  Isnt that what engineers do?    ;D

Like I've always heard, it'll go fast enough to kill you. But in all seriousness, it will go fast enough to scare you, so why go any faster? I don't give a toot about a motorcycle that can break 200 mph, cause who has the need to go that fast? Not even professional racers! So why the need for more hp, when the huge majority of street riders won't need it? I would think if you have to ask, it'll probably go fast enough for you.
Nonsense.  My 650 isn't fast enough for me.  I NEED a 200hp V-Max to get to work in the morning.  Don't you??   ;)

SRUST58 that spare tyre is for emergencies and I'm sitting on the junk in the trunk. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I am a 36 year old kid.  The bike is all put together and fired right up.  It is loud and sounds very angry!  It sure sounds fast!  I need to do a few things still before I can ride it, but should have it out in a few days.

For what it's worth, my 750F is faster than a Shadow 1100ACE. At least to around 70mph.

I don't know how many times I've heard people say one of these SOHC bikes brought the front end right up in the air.

I've been riding these things for almost 40 years and you have to really try to get air under that front tire. It sure as hell doesn't happen by accident unless you've pinned the throttle and your hand slips off the clutch.

+1    These bikes are quite hard to wheelstand even if you know how, they have a really high balance point and need piles of revs to get them there. Unless they have a lot of engine work they will NEVER power stand....

bikey will skip front wheel in hard acceleration 1st gear, kissing the sky with front end requires dumping the last bit of the clutch. I don't bounce as good as I used to so don't do it often.  :D

If you want to be fast on an old bike get a 2-stroke widow maker. Powerband like a light switch, no suspension or brakes to speak of and an oscillating frame.
