New chain?
« on: May 10, 2006, 07:10:13 PM »
I have a 76 CB550K and I would like to get a new chain.  Are there any particular brands that are better than others? I also noticed that there are some that are labeled as regular or heavy duty, does it really matter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'll put in the general warning that you should change sprockets with the chain; worn sprockets will destroy a new chain in no time.
For chain, I would go with a name brand; DID,  EK, or Tsubaki. Get the mid-priced one, the cheapo ones would be OK but don't last as long. The high-dollar ones are for modern 100HP+ bikes, you don't need that kind of strength for an old 550. I'm not sure about the 500, but many SOHC4 models can not use O-ring or X-ring chains because the chain is wider and will grind away at the sprocket shaft oil seal.
AVOID industrial chain, it just isn't strong enough for motorcycle use. This stuff comes in loooooong lengths on big reels and the shop cuts off the number of links you want. Get a proper bike chain, they all come in a little flat box.

I just ordered this stuff from Bikebandit.com:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Row  Qty            Part Description        Price Status
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1    1  3214402-148613 Progressive      $65.30
  2    1     5276272-001 JT 37-Tooth      $23.65
  3    1     5276261-001 JT 17-Tooth      $18.80
  4    1  3183703-110160 D.I.D Stand      $33.26
  5    1  3183715-110171 D.I.D Stand       $2.66

Best price I could find for the Progressive front springs - in Canada they're 2x the price.  You want a standard 530 chain 100 links.  I wasn't sure if the D.I.D. chain came with a master link, so for the extra $2.66 I ordered one.  For the $42 more, buy new sprockets.

Thanks for the info.  I looked over the sprokets and they looked to be in very good condition but maybe I should just spring for the new sprockets too.

Absolutely buy new sprockets - will ensure all wear is uniform.  While your sprockets may look ok, unless you're measuring them against a new one, it's hard to see just how worn they really are.
