Comstar rims anyone ever fixed one?
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:47:36 PM »
Our 82 650 nighthawk with chain drive has a Comstar rear rim size M 2.50 x 16. A buddy and I just noticed tonight that 4 of the 5 bolts on the inner parts are loose. The rear wheel sounds like a bad bearing when you put weight on it but the bearings appear fine.

Here is a pic below. The rim of course says all over it to not disassemble it and Honda has made that very difficult by placing odd shaped bolts and nuts on it to discourage removal. Has anyone ever replaced these bolts with good grade 9 or 10 hardened steel bolts before?

Yes, someone did take their comstars apart.  They did some powdercoating and put them back together successfully.  Try searching comstar repair or similar stuff.
intrigued by the wail...seduced by the scream.

Not having much luck with the searching. Does anyone recall this thread mentioned?

Thanks for the link DedHed, I think I would stay away from replacing the bolts. If we replace the rim I found a decent one for sale. The wife is not sure she wants to ride this bike anymore as the rim makes here nervous among other things on the bike that may be wore out :(
