Hey,

As I am sure you all know, my CB has given me more than alittle "resistance" the few past months. ::) If it wasn't the brake lines, or a leaking master, or a too short front wheel spacer, etc..

The bike is going to the best shop in the city (Chicago) this weekend to get ALL issues sorted out and fixed. I am gonna have some time (about a month) to ponder on where I want the bike to go next.

I have been thinking about doing something different with the paint. At it's current state, the tank and sidecovers have about 2 rattle cans worth of Dupli-color low gloss paint on them. Looks tough, but fuel (& brake fluid) eats right thru it, and makes it look like crap. Plus, everything now-a-days has a flat paintjob, even bikes straight outta the Harley dealer :o ::) :o

I was thinking about doing a gloss black paintjob, with some metallic green scallops, or something along those lines. I have always been a fan of scallops, as I feel they look more "era correct" then flames on certain vechiles. Maybe do something with a Honda factory tank graphic. I still want to stay with a black base, and then use something attention getting , kinda like Chippy's CB he has..

So, should I keep the flat thing going with the paint, or look into something else ? Current pics of the bike can be seen here-----> http://www.sohc4.us/gallery/v/members/personal/PROTEAL55/1955/1972/

PT,

Personally I've really been likeing the flat black look you have going on. I'm a big fan of the stripped down simple look. If it were my bike I'd probably get a pro to give me a proper flat black so as to avoid to issues you are having with the paint wearing. I'm personally not a huge fan of scallops but I do like the idea of perhaps working in some sort of take off of the original decal scheme.

Whatever you decide to do I'm sure it will look awesome as everything you have done so far has shown you've got a great eye.

My 2 cents.

Well a color pic would help but I would say to do some type or silver highlights on the tank and covers. Maybe do a black metal flake paint on the tank and covers or a dark gray flake.

That's the age-old question right there..  On a DOHC CB750 I rebuilt, for a long time I had the bodywork painted gloss black from a rattle can.  It was awesome like that, stealth mode..  No name plate/badges, etc.- just black.  People would ask me at the gas station all the time- what kinda bike is that!?

On my CB900F, when I first got it, it was painted like a late-60's Buick green, which was interesting and original, but just not what I was looking for.  I painted it a pearl white metallic flake paint, and I really liked the look.  Later though, I got a deal on NOS factory bodywork and tank, so I went with the stock, 1982 Grey metallic with blue Stripe and Honda emblem, etc.

So, I'm probably not much help, except to maybe suggest you mix it up a bit-  Perhaps a flat black tank, with gloss black scallops?  That might be cool..

Good idea. Maybe gloss black with flat scallops outlined in silver ?
That might be the ticket....
Maybe gloss black with some stock Honda tank design in flat black ?
Maybe just paint the whole thing silver metallic with flat painted on "HONDA" badges ?

The ideas I have are never-ending.....

Sorry to be ignorant, can someone define scallops?  Just curious because I am thinking of painting my tank/side covers as well

Thanks,

Rob

And those were done freehand.

And I can tell you, you cant tell it was done free hand in person. This was the coolest thing to ever happen to this KZ440. The guy who bought it (my paint man) says he cant go anywhere without turning heads. Sweet.

Hey that tank looks nice.  I'm getting ready to do something similar, probably black with some white stripes -- maybe a number plate on the seat.  I've done a few rattle can paint jobs, but just a single color and clear coat.

What's the best way to do a two-tone job?  Paint the black, mask it off, then the white, or the reverse?  Is there a rule of thumb for painting darker colors over the lighter ones or something?  Did you paint the pinstriping by hand, or is that the adhesive stuff on a roll?

The pinstripe is 3M stuff on a roll. I shot the black first, masked it out and then the white.

Say it with Kylon  ;D

got to do something with that seat 1st, it just looks out of place with the rest of the look you have going on.

What do you have in mind ?
I can go solo seat with different fender, or a overused "cafe" style seatpan.

Solo with fender would be ok or a stepped seat. Something to bulk the back a little. A stepped seat like those on the 78 weigh maybe a couple ounces more and thats it.

a steped solo seat with a fender. Fender short, bobbed, old school. Fender long enough just to start the curve around back of tire. What I mean by a stepped solo seat is a solo seat with a #$%* pad.

I am trying to chase down some pics.

No #$%* pad will be going on my bike, EVER !

I am gonna play around with my solo seat I have tonite, and try to mock up a few things before the bike goes to the shop on Saturday. I still have bits & pieces of my stock front fender, which I might be able to use in for the new rear...?

I should not have used the term #$%* pad,, just a slightly stepped up tapered in the back seat.

When you talking solo, you refering to a seat like whats on the bike in your avatar.

Naw , not really.
I removed the pass. pegs the first day I bought the bike. I am not a big fan of riding two up, especially on a bike as low as mine. Without the pegs, I have allot less chance of getting in trouble with MY woman by giving a ride to ANOTHER woman...
Their is a method to my madness....

aww but thats no fun! ;D

I suppose if you want to substitute for not giving other women a ride you could whisper another womans name in her ear and see how long you can hang on!!! ;D ;D
