vavle job, guide replace CB750F
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:42:16 AM »
Okay, I am completely new to engine work. I have a 78 750F that is smoking like a cheap hooker.  Also, two oil leaks somewhere on the lower end of things.  I want to make sure I have a dependable bike without worries related to the engine.  I want to learn, but the technical stuff I am completely lost on, dis-assembly and reassembly are doable.  If I need a complete top-end rebuild what would that run (no modifications/improvements).  Has anyone been through this before? Since I have to pull the engine what should I replace repair while there?  I have a vavle train off an old 750F (maybe) that i could use for parts?  Cost for me is a factor, but I want it done right - is it possible for me to do a top-end rebuild? What would that include in terms of parts? Can those parts be replaced by me?

Valve guide fitting and seat cutting is a specialist job and the 77/78 heads and pistons are different to early ones.

The absolute best you can do is send the head to Mreik for a valve job and internal clean up, you will not be dissapointed as the work is better than A1!!!

Agreed, I have been working on these bikes for years and just now am beginning to do my own machine work like valve seats.  Some guys are into that and like it.  I farmed all my work out and just did the disassembly, reassembly engine tasks.  I had all my work done locally at a speed shop that had a stellar reputation.

Agreed, Mike did mine (77 750F, same problems) send him both heads.
