I guess I see what you're saying, I'm just in the mindset that turnsignals or not, some 17 year old girl texting while putting on makeup while surfing facebook while exchanging CD's and driving isn't going to see you either way.
Senario:
You notice a sky full of spears hurling in your general direction.
Do you:
- Stand your ground because you believe none will hit you?
- Ignore them and accept that maybe some will maim you?
- Try to dodge them as they get closer?
- Dive into the steel protective enclosure you prepared for such an occasion?

Just because things can happen beyond your control, is not a good reason to do nothing toward besting your chances of avoidance. IMO

Cheers,

you're right, we should all just sell our bikes and drive cars.

It's not an all-or-nothing issue, although you seem to be trying to make it into one.  You can choose to minimize the risk to yourself while riding your motorcycle without giving up riding your motorcycle entirely.

Not ALL of us.  Just the ones who don't have the sense to reduce their risks.  But, I'm not sure I want an irresponsible, reckless, belligerent, and ignorant person sharing the highway with those who DO wish to survive the practice.
Of course, that is exactly why traffic laws had to be made, to reduce those occurrences.  The laws weren't ALWAYS there.  They were installed when stupid or malicious people did stupid and malicious things.  Then someone said and/or agreed; "There ought to be a law..."

Want more laws?  Keep doing stupid and malicious things.  New laws are often reactionary.

Absolutely right, politicians ("law makers") are completely reactive, it's extremely rare to see them pro active.

haha, I'm not doubting they don't reduce risk, my whole point was that hand signals, in my opinion, while awkward and understood to most drivers, will get the attention of a driver just as much, if not more, as turnsignals will.  It has nothing to do with being belligerent or irresponsible, it's just what us folks, outside of the Peoples Republic of California, call an "opinion."

i sometimes time use hand signals as an extra,,i live and ride in mostly a hinterland area,,if im turning off somewhere and a car has been behind me for a while ill flick on the electric indicator and if my gut feels its in order ill make a proper obvious hand/arm signal, lots of drivers once in the country think the rat race race is behind them and let their guard and observation go down,i hope it also reminds them of days gone by when hand signals were part of manners almost, sadly these days the most hand signals i see are the bird(middle finger even when the giver is at fault!).i like the big factory signals.

Get these bar end turn signals.....

http://www.designcorse.co.uk/Mv_Agusta_Lights_Indicators/Oberon_Bar_End_LED_Indicators

It'll keep the back of the bike clean (if that's what your going for) and still give some notification to the f*#kers behind you.

That's what I was thinking plus LED tail with integrated signals.  I use LED on my jeep for years and it's a great stuff, the visibility is unbelievable even in fog.
