550 frame size question

are the earlier 550 frames smaller than lets say a 77 cb550's?  i have a 75 550f frame and a mint 77 cb550f and i want to do a swap to end up with a bike closer to my size with out sporting short springs.  seems like the forks are also shorter on the older 550s.

As far as i remember it was cosmetic differences only

nope I have found that the newer 550's actually have a slightly smaller frame then my 74 you sure would not know to look at it I only found out when i took a tape measure to it but I think it has to do with the design being streamlined as time went on
