AN fitting questions
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:27:12 PM »
I am having a custom oil tank built for my 750. I will be using the attached AN fittings on the lines and AN bungs on the tank. I have read that a sealant (Teflon, thread sealer, etc.) MUST NOT BE USED with AN-fittings, can someone confirm that?
Thx.

YOu don't need anything like that since it's a tapered seat.  It would be like using teflon tape on brake fittings.

Yea, the seal is not actually made by the threads, thus no use of teflon tape.  the seal is made by the cup and cone of the tapered fitting contacting each other.

Hi.The fittings you describe do not seal by the threads but rather by a tapered seat on the male and female.    Rock On

just remeber to convert everything over to an fittings. sae flares are 45 degress and an are 37.5. most modern aircraft flex hoses are teflon since it will work with just about any fluid.. as far as part numbers for fittings/unions and the such a d suffux will designate aluminium, a j will be stainless and no suuufex will be plated steel. ei an924-4d= 1/4 dia aluminum. teflon tape is usally not needed on flared fittings but i use it on pipe thread. also you can use a thread sealing grade of loctite. sorry dont know the number of it off the top of my head. have fun and good luck!!

JIC and AN fittings are identical and interchangeable however JIC are mallable metal whereas AN (Army/Navy) are all aluminum.
As was mentioned SAE fittings have different angles and should never be used together with either JIC or AN fittings.
The sizes are in 1/16" increments...#10 would be 10 times 1/16 = 10/16" or 5/8" . This is the OD of the tubing.

Yes, that's how I came to decide I needed AN-10. In the meantime I have learned that there are much cheaper options (e.g NPT with Teflon), however I like the looks of the AN.
