Clutch gear and Generator Rotor help
« on: November 16, 2011, 07:00:48 AM »
Hello Folks,

I am having a problem with my CB750.  I can't kickstart the bike.  Originally I assumed the pistons were stuck.  However, I notice the clutch gears move freely but the AC Generator rotor doesn't budge.  Should the rotor NOT move when the clutch gears move?  Also, if the clutch gears move (including the starting motor reduction gear) does that mean the pistons are free or does it have nothing to do with the pistons?
Attached is an illustration of the problem.  I am pretty new to these engines and would appreciate any information on how these components work.

the crankshaft drives the primary gears by two chains. the primary gear shaft drives the outer clutch basket.
if you disengage the clutch, your inner clutch basket will move free when in neutral and/or with lifted rear wheel.

Hey Aaron, first of all, welcome to the forum!
The starter gear in your illustration should be free to turn in one direction. The alternator rotor is bolted to the crankshaft, and if it won't turn, than you probably do have stuck pistons. Lots of guys have had good results by removing the spark plugs and filling the cylinders with a mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid, which acts as a very good penetrating oil.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

(You are speaking of the starter clutch, correct?)
Per scottly: The large gear behind the rotor is free to turn in one direction, along with the reduction gears and the starter pinion gear.
