74 CB 550 Front Cam Chain Tensioner a Bit Loose
« on: September 23, 2011, 11:58:19 AM »
I'm replacing my cam chain due to a low rev clatter that goes away above 3k rpm or so.   My hammer hands managed to drop both ends of the chain into the case, tho I was able to fish them out with a strong magnet stick and a bit of bent coat hanger.  In the meantime, I removed the cam and noticed, while fishing with the magnet, that the front cam chain tensioner is slightly loose.  My Haynes manuel is sketchy on how it is installed, saying only to make sure that the end marked UP is up.  It appears to be mounted via pins rather than bolted in.  I sure hope this is normal and not what was causing the clatter.  Any thoughts on this?  Would the spring tension on the cam chain keep the front tensioner from moving about on its pins?

a po might have installed that guide backwards!its orientation is the same as the rear main one,,it faces forward and lives inside the chain loop,it can be jiggled through 90 degrees to remove it,you dont need to pull the head.
