Can a properly tuned, stock cb750k5 beat a stock HD in a stop light to stop light race?

Why do Harley's have so many chrome parts?

Because the shiny parts are easier to find on the side of the road after they have fallen off!

I grew up in a railroad town where many of the workers road old HDs. I no longer know any of them but I would be curious what they think of the neo-harley revolution.

Because people like those shiny parts. Just like bunch of knuckle heads I've heard of that like those Old SOHC Hondas. ;)

YOU ARE DAMN RIGHT

Anti- Harley threads are getting as old as the dog crap on the bottom of my boots.

My point stands the same same....

HD rider likes what he rides, you like what you ride, SO WHO GIVES A #$%*. If we spent as much time working on our half done projects as we spend trashing Harley riders - our bikes would be perfect.

I'm not trashing Harleys or their riders since lots of my co-works ride them and none have trashed my ride.

However, I whipped my co-worker's ass when he was on his stock '05 883 Sportster and I was on my stock '76 400F.  Nearly the same power and I was 150 pounds less than he was.  Simple power to weight.  That was in an impromptu stoplight drag.  If the road curved, he would have been even more embarrassed.

As it is, he now respects the "little" 400.

good question....why anyone would ask or give a #$%*,I don't understand ...but...OK...if I were to put my 811 that I built against the shovelhead that I built...humm...the 74 would blow it in the weeds maybe(maybe) the first1/8 mile, then the 811 would just fly by after that....from take off they are just totally two differrent experiences that I very much enjoy both...I just got burnout on the whole h-d thang and sold mine after 12 years...I am enjoying my cb very much now

You just have to be truly happy with what you ride I guess. That is the reason we all ride right?

All other things being equal, an SOHC is faster than an HD.

All other things are never equal, however, which makes it fun.

To wit: I had a buddy that had twenty years of Ascot speedway experience under his belt.  He saved his beans for five years and bought a Fat Boy, which is a pig of a motorcycle by any standard.

He also regularly kicked my ass on it, with me on my '78 750F.  Lots of ability, lots of experience, and a big old set of balls.

I have a 1992 Sportster 1200 stock and a K5 750 stock.
Bikes seem fairly comparable as far as acceleration goes.  The 750 might be a little bit faster.

Well hell...I would hope so.There aren't a whole lot of Harley's that take on a Honda 750 off the line if everything is straight up.

I don't have a clue nor give a damn, I don't have my bike to race between stoplights.

Well, a few $ knows my old 1982 XJ650 beat an HD,
don't know about the CB750's 'cause I got married
and the wife holds the pursestrings after I bought
the cb750's. ;D

Depends on which Harley, which Honda, which rider, etc. V-Rod perhaps no doubt! If I could ride my Harley Fat Boy and my 75 CB750F at the same time I'd let you know. Very difficult to tell without racing them. 2 totally different bikes in the way they run. Everybody should have at least 2 bikes.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

1200 sportster has about 58~60 bhp and 600lbs. (883 has 43bhp) at the wheel (Evo motors) Iron head,(shovel) 28~30 bhp  New 1488cc twin cams are 61bhp.
real easy to get off the line but run out of puff early
Is there such a thing as a stock 92 sporty? every single one in the world has had something done to it, something that age probably had a lot. (just guessing)
The 750 isn't the rocket people believe, at least not without work. but, its almost a 40 yr old bike (never mind the production year, when was it designed?) Claimed 67bhp,at the crank. Japanese horses must be smaller ;D
If you want to play racers be prepared for the consequences. 120bhp? no problem
836 and lots of revs? you'll bust the rods. fit stronger rods? you'll bust the primary chains. fit stronger chains, well, there goes the transmission.  Enjoy what you have , dont try and make it something its not.

(W) reck it
repair it

Are we running out of projects? Are there no more ideas of things to do to our Hondas.
I wish there was a forum for just this sort of thing. You could put the H-D grudge races, the
snubbed attitude, the sportbike dilemma and thing s such as that. Is it that some of us need a
release of anxiety? I have always said that,"To each his own, Live and let." Some have Hondas
and Harleys in their possesion. I have Hondas (SOHC & DOHC), Yamahas, Suzukis, a Kawasaki
(dirt bike), Jawas, CZ and a lone Hodaka. Next to the Hondas, the Jawas and the CZ have
sentimental value. People have what they have because of one reason or another. You that
have the Harleys and the Hondas, take them out and race them. Then, you can tell us what
happened. In the mean time, I will be spending time wondering what later model parts I can
adapt to a project bike to upgrade the brakes or suspension and things like that.

You'll have to excuse me, I just don't seem to get the enjoyment, that some get,
of hashing out whether the Harley will beat the Honda and all. The fact is, I (my 2 cents) like
the Hondas better (I'm not cutting the Harleys) for their look, ride, parts cost, the fact that if
they had not been produced and imported, the bike industry might have taken a different
turn. (Look how long it took Harley to start upgrading their bikes as it was) I look forward to
seeing what is being done to the bikes by their owners, questions about their bikes that some
of us might be able to assist with and all. I appreciate the fact that, within this group of
people, there are those with some info and experience that could help others while there are
also some with tons of info and experience that can do the same. Then, the fact that we're
all in the same group is great. This is the best site there is and here we are going on, once
again on the Harley/Honda thing. I'm going out and fool with one of my Hondas. Later on, Bill

There with you Bill. People buy what they want for their own reasons. Would you switch to a Harley if some of them tried to convince you? So the reciprocal is true also. We'll never convince them that a 30 plus year old Honda is what they want. I have no desire for a new Harley in the least. A 1947 knucklehead would be nice for a toy, but for the prices asked for them I can easily build 6 or more CB750s which would bring a larger smile on my face.
But I gather there are some who feel threatened by their choices and feel that by disparaging others who are not driving the same brand as them makes their choice seem logical - to them, in their little space. The world is made up of many types of people, why do some feel it necessary to want all like themselves? They think their existance is the perfect one? Then beat mortality, and I'll have a second look.

You guys are killing me!  I never meant for this to be a HD grudge thread.  I am a new CB owner and I was simply curious which bikes were faster.  I do not race & I do not insult other bikes (other than joking with my HD owning friends).  I have a good friend with a 06 Busa yet I always pick on him because my bike has a kick starter and his doesn't.  I also always tell him that I can whip him in a race for the same reason.  It's all in good fun.  He is 46 and I am 36.  We both have families and no desire to see the other die in a high speed wreck.  Why is it OK to have a thread accusing the President of the USA of purposely killing Americans to start a war yet I can't ask if a CB can beat a HD without being attacked by everyone on this site with chip on their shoulder?

It was just a simple performance question,  Nothing more.

Thank you to those who posted facts instead of their prejudices.

FYI, I've taken one before (an HD) but you gotta watch the tach and know how to get the most out of the bike. It runs so smoooooth that you can redline it and not even realize it...
