Hey Boat guys!
« on: September 21, 2011, 08:23:07 PM »
I am looking for the wiring schematic for an old Johnson 35hp Outboard.   My model is the RDS-20 from 1958.  It's a beauty and she is all there to get running but I am missing a certain concept and I believe that it is due to me chasing the thoughts of a PO.  I know there are downloadable manuals out there but I can't find one online.  Anyone?

They had wiring back then?  Heh heh.

My uncle restores those old outboards but mostly Mercs I'll see if he has a manual I can copy a page out of.

Thanks guys.  I'm that much closer to taking over water world.  Now If I can actually understand how this magneto thing works.  I'm scratching my head a bit but it'll pass.

....... Now If I can actually understand how this magneto thing works.  .......

little freakin' lightning bolts come spittin' outa them two big fat wires. if not, there's sumpin wrong.

the sumpin wrong is usually the coils coming apart in chunks. there's a peep hole in the flywheel that you can see once the pull starter is off.

point gap .020   plug gap .030 if you have functional coils.

Yeah Mark, thanks.  I finally got my head wrapped around the fact that it is self-generating rather than needing 12 volts at the coil.  I spun it up last night after I got it all wired up and whammo!  I've got lightning bolts on both cylinders and then not when I cross the two appropriate magneto taps.  I declare that this little girl will run.  All I need is the right hull and trailer and am good to go just in time for winter.  It's good though because I'll have this to look forward to in the spring.  I love doing this kind of mechanical archeology.

This is what it looks like but this isn't my pic: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=johnson+super+seahorse+rds-20+35+hp&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&biw=1280&bih=680&tbm=isch&tbnid=pKPU1tz0fyLSoM:&imgrefurl=http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php%3Ft%3D249155&docid=dBCtfnkG2DV5XM&w=1600&h=1333&ei=xYB8Tuu_CsLh0QGSp_X0Dw&zoom=1
