550 cafe seat started today...on the cheap woohoo.
« on: September 23, 2011, 11:56:30 AM »
OK so I picked up some tanks at the junk yard. I cut the best looking one up and did a mock up of it. I am gonna weld a plate at the bottom and on the front. Gotta cut the holy fire out of the foam to make it look decent. at least half of it has to go lol. Gonna put two bolts into each side of the seat frame and then run a ring of bolts around the whole thing for looks. I am dreading the time when I am close but have to figure out the tail light. first thoughts are to jut shape some red glass to the end of the tank. second maybe find a light that will match the countour and bolt it on. Third(of which I have no experience in)LED's.

Looks pretty good actually... IMO I would move the tin forward more so the tire sticks out a little more

That is a great call tews. I have decided on doing just that so I can use the frame of the seat for my mounting location. Looks like I may need a smaller battery or just tilt this one a lil bit...oh   here are more pics. I got a lil welding done.

made a small sheet to bolt in and hold everything together.

total cost so far 25 bux

To help with support and since you have welding experience you may want to make a bracket like this and connect it to the rear of the frame to support the weight of the battery if you are moving to under the seat.. The link show s you what i am talking about...http://cafebikerentals.com/parts.html

HAHA I was just looking around for diameter sizes ....I was thinking maybe some conduit with some flat bar on the end to slide in there. Thats just crazy.

Well may not have to do that at all. There is plenty of room for bolts to the seat frame now. It looks soooo much better slid on up there.....good call brotha. Only issue is im gonna have to beat the fire out of the seat pan to give me enough room for the battery now but that is gonna be fun lol. I will spray some rubberized undercoating to alleviate any spark problems haha. maybe a rubber strip of 3m or something. All this has only taken me about 2 hours. I might take it to get it wrapped. but Im cutting the foam...just wait till my wife gets home to see this mess....Im gonna blame it on the dog.

I am gonna slide it up even more I think. It is as small as it possibly can be and still hold a battery and the electronix. Once I slide it up some more I think it will be right nice. off to look at tail lights.

Well I am about to ride 15 miles on a cut up seat with the cone in my backpack out to the country where I can make some noise and beat the seat pan into submission. the a few bolts and I gotta spray it just so it doesnt look sooo bad. I found a battery that Is the same output as mine but just small enough to work right in there. and still looking for lights but I think I found one if I can mod it just right.  bump

Well got it all put together right today. I need to sand paint and wrap to complete. then I want to find some of those bullet turn signals. Add 15 bux at home depot for rubber and paint and nuts/bolts.

Nice job lines look good. Is the taillight going to clear the rear tire on a big bump looks close on one pic and ok on another hard to tell. But hats off to you for trying something on your own and having it come out nice.
