605cc kit for a CB500 in a CB550?
« on: May 12, 2006, 02:26:37 PM »
I was wondering if this kit on ebay will fit my 1978 cb550.

Has anyone tried this?
I know there is a 605 kit for the 550, but I can't seem to find one.
How much machine work will i need to get this kit to work?

Thanks again.

I am going to be doing that exact same mod to my 550, from what I have read there is enough meat on the 550 liners to bore them out to take the (I think) 61mm pistons.

550 will take 61mm pistons in standard liners. It doesnt work out to 605 though, 591.???cc

So we wouldn't use the liners that come with this kit?  We'd just fit the new pistons?

I just had my cyclenders done for the 555cc kit, 59mm pistons, and I am having the top of the cyclenders and the bottom of the head planed flat.  Just hopeing that it doesn't raise the compressing too far, but the two faces where kind of beat up and I think that might have been one of the problems of keeping the head gasket in place.  Woun't know for another month or so, still have to finish the frame.

After boring the cylinders out pretty much, yep.

I used the 59mm version of this kit from the same seller - it's a 0.5mm overbore on the 550 which is well within factory specs.  The 59mm pistons etc. are made by ART, which is the OEM Honda manufacturer.  I'm having an oil burning problem after the rebuild though, which may be related to the valve work I did at the same time.  I used the aftermarket valve seals which were in a gasket kit I had, which may have been a mistake :)  Won't know until I do a leak-down test and see if it's up top (hopefully) or back in the cylinders.

If it's in the cylinders, I may be stepping up to the 61mm pistons next  :o  Someone mentioned you can use stock 750 pistons as well, but for the price, these kit's are a great deal for pistons/rings/pins/circlips and gasket.
