Trikes: Do I give 'em the "wave"?
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:18:16 PM »
When I pass a trike, should I give 'em the friendly "wave", as I would to my fellow two-wheeled riders?
How about just an elbow?

I wave to everything as well, but what gets me is the poor response in return. When I was a young fella, (way back) I seem to remember the biking fraternity was much more friendly, in that all but the "bikie gangs" waved back.

Me, too.  Scooter folks are always SO surprised to get the wave and usually smile really big, so it's worth it.

ive never liked trikes,,in fact i dislike them,,although i can feel for someone disabled who still wants to ride and have all the wind and engine feel, ill nod,,i rarely take my hands off the bars unless giving a signal,,for example a slow down for cops ahead or a turn signal.

I'd wave to a scooter before Id wave to a trike. If anything they should get 50% less waves since they have 50% more wheels. Much like cars get 100% less waves since they have 100% more wheels. My math is sound, case closed.

Makes sense.  So since I normally give the standard, two finger, wave to other motorcycle riders, I should give the 50% less one-finger wave to trike riders? ;D

I recently finished a restoration on a CJ5 and have been driving it around.  It's been over 20 years since I last drove a jeep on the street and I forgot that jeep drivers wave at each other like bike riders do.  So if I am in a CJ5 should I wave at Wranglers?  Or old Toyota FJs?  Of course the flat fender guys think the last true jeep was the CJ3B and the CJ5 is a pretender.  No way are they going to wave at me.  Then of course those in Willys jeeps look down on the AMC junk.  What to do, what to do.

I've got it.  Wave at anyone, because it is the friendly and positive thing to do.

Trikers are bikers.  It has forks and a handle bar.  A lot of the trike guys around here are older or disabled, but no all of them.  They really are a hoot to ride.  You get the same biking sensation without the lean, just like when you add a hack off to one side.

Oh, I stand corrected.  I DON'T wave at everything.  Those guys on the bicycles with chainsaw engines don't warrant a wave...

Perhaps a trike rider has some physical condition that precludes riding two wheels, but they want to ride anyway. Who am I to judge.. from a distance.  :-\

I considered this but most of the trike riders I see seem to suffer from the "condition" of being morbidly obese.

Above what percentage of body fat is the cutoff where people shouldn't be waved at anymore?
