Need some advice on a engine stand
« on: October 03, 2011, 03:26:08 PM »
Hey everyone,

I am going to start a tear down on my engine by the end of the year and could use some thoughts on a stand for the motor. I would like something a little more on the mobile side and also something that I can raise and lower. The engine will be built on it so it won't leave until it goes into the frame. I came across this and thought it could work:

Anyone have any other ideas or thoughts on this matter?

Thanks Much as always.

I know someone who has one of these as a lift for heavy crap like lathes etc. Works very well. But I wouldn't use it as a working bench for a motor. For less than that $$$ you can buy a purpose-built engine stand that you can use to turn the engine around..to work on top vs bottom. Or a milk crate, lift it with a mate and put it on a solid wooden bench.
It could also fall off that stand when u start brute force to lever off stuck bits.

I recommend you see the tips and tricks section.  read the C-hook/engine stand post.  I made my C-hook from a piece of tubing from a junked excercise machine, it was free.  I finish my rotisserie as soon as I need one.  Got the engine stand on a HF coupon for $40.00.

I read through the c-hook thread and I think that is the way to go. Just need to figure out how to drill the angle brackets. Not really setup for that.

I made one out of 2x4's. Worked great!

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Imho, there's nothing cheaper  (except 2x4's)  or more effective than this.
HF engine stand, four pieces of angle iron and some threaded rod.

I also have the HF $40 special and have my 550 motor on it now.  Works great.  Only downside is if you need to split the cases, can't do that with it mounted to any type of stand.  Works great for top end and cylinders work and for detailing the engine.

Actually isn't there a thread here somewhere where someone used two engine stands to build a "Siamese" stand to hold the engine while the cases were split?

Once I figured out how to make the angle adapters this is the approach I am going to take.
