can't see much in mirrors at 75 mph
« on: May 12, 2006, 11:03:17 AM »
Hi, I can't see much in mirrors above 70 mph ..  The vibration in handlebars make the images very blurred ..  Interstingly, the left one I replaced from partssnmore is more vibrating than the right one .. Is it normal or I have a problem ?

Thanks, - serge

Often it is the type of mirror(read: CHEAP) that is susceptible to vibration. If you end up coming over for that tune-up I'll let you try some Napolean mirrors I have laying about. I've also got a set of stock mirrors with the rubber insert around the mirror glass.

Carb synch and tune-up can cut down on vibration but sometimes isn't enough if the mirrors are crap.

Most mirrors get "fuzzy" with high rpm vibration.
I know that Drag Specialties sells some sorta vibration dampner things (not sure if they work)...

My experience mirrors scondon's.  The aftermarket mirrors typically seem to be lighter.  Less mass seems to lead to higher amplitude and frequency vibrations.

There used to be a bar weight called the "Bar Snake" that went in the bars instead of using bar-end weights. Don't know if they're still around, though. Some people fill their bars with lead shot.  Otherwise, Napoleons act as bar-end weights and are held in place with rubber slugs to further reduce vibes.  Also check front end for out of round tire, tire seated properly, stering head bearings adjusted properly, and air pressure.  Sometimes it's just a loose nut behind the handlebars.

I worry about sliding off the back of my seat!  :o

My mirrors vibrate at that speed too. I just figured it was from 75 mph wind. That's Cat 1 hurricane force, should they really be that steady in these conditions?
