now my number 4 carb is dumping gas out overflow...
« on: September 24, 2011, 08:13:00 AM »
like it was it's job... which I guess it kind of is.

anyway I went out to start the bike and charge up the battery (wife rushed me and I left the keys in ignition) and let her run for  bit and the number 4 carb overflow created a basketball sized (around) gasoline puddle. Could this be from a plug not firing properly or a bad float perhaps?

Most likely your float or float valve is stuck.

Until you fix it: Tap it with a stick or tool that has rubber coating to unstick it. I use the rubberized handle of the crescent wrench I keep in the saddlebags.
I have one that will stick if I do the freeway for a while and then pull into a stop and set the bike on the kickstand. Number 4 will stick 1 out of 5 times. A quick tap will set it free.

To fix it:
Remove the float, check in a glass of water for 30 min to see if it sinks from taking on water. Replace.

Check the float for height and the little backstop tab that determines how deep it will go. If that is bent, it will let the float valve lower enough to bind up and not go back up.

If it keeps doing that, time to replace the float valve. Find the kind with the little rubber tips, they seal better than the all brass ones.

could be a broken post!

Sine it is the number 4, it should be pretty trivial to remove the bowl and check it out,,,,

Needs four new float needles. Thats all.
The rubber tips get hardened or degraded.
You JUST need the float needle, not the float needle and seat.

I just saved you a couple hundred.

Ill save you even more money. Is your tank a little rusty? if this leak becomes persistent you may want to run a in line filter for a little while .

No rust in the tank. It was resealed several years ago.  I'll look into those float needles. Thanks guys!
