Rear stand
« on: August 13, 2011, 01:17:57 PM »
So I went to Harbor Freight today to pick up a rear motorcycle spool stand and when I get back I realize that it won't work. The support brackets aren't large enough to fit around the rear axle. I think I could possibly force the bracket between the swing arm bracket and sprocket but it's a tight fit and if I'm going to be lubing the chain, tightening it, etc. I don't want the risk of it falling off.

I've included a pic so you can see what I'm dealing with.

Forgot to ask if anyone has recommendations for a good rear stand I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks :)

It's called a spool stand because those little forks are supposed to capture the "spools" that you purchase and mount to your swing arm.  Not looking a swingarm right now, but you could either weld/fashion a spot for those "spools" to bolt into, or you could find an already existing bolt/mounting hole in the same relative position, and come up with a spool mount there.  Shock mounting bolt location?

Also, those stands sometimes come with or can be fitted with adapters to fit swingarms without spools.  The adapter/piece looks like a bit of angle iron with some plastic/rubber coating on it (usually.)

Basically a wide L (coated with rubber material) welded to a rod that fits in, yours should have come with them if you bought it from Harbor Freight. I slip mine in somewhere in front of the axle and so it does not interfere with the chain, sprocket or mufflers. You'll figure it out after a few tries.

I know the price on that HF one is good, but I decided to spend a little more because heck, I know Im going to have bikes my whole life.  I got a Vortex stand, super happy.  Its really heavy duty, very adjustable and so strong I have no worries climbing on my bike, starting and running through the gears while on the stand.  Comes set up to pick up the bike with spools or with rubber padded arms to cradle the bike under the swing arm.  And its easy to roll the bike around on the stand too.  Nice wheels and bearings.

I don't have that hardware. As you can see from the picture, I have those two brackets with the hardware(screws, nuts) and the stand. Am I missing something?

You bought a different one than I did, I bought the tubular one that came with the paddles. The paddles might be extra for your model.

$6.99 - It states in the rear stand description on the website that these are sold separately.  I imagine there was no mention in the actual store however...
