I would suggest the best help he can get is do a search. Oil has been beat to death.

i just use 10w40 but make sure there are NO friction modifiers.  I haven't had my bike long enough to try a different weight to tell you if there is a difference or not but everyone says they will make your clutch slip if there are friction modifiers or lighter.

I get 10w 40 motorcycle only, I was wondering if there was a brand that was better for the late sohc's for whatever reason, I'll do a search.

regular castrol oil in 10/40 is as close as it comes to the original oil for these bikes or you can pay twice as much from a honda dealer but young guys on the sales floor will try to sell you the wrong oil

Enjoy it while you can... 'cause we run out of it.
If you are not riding in the freezing cold, 15w-40 is the better oil.
In summer temperatures I would even consider 20-40. Remember: first generation multigrade oils were 10-30 for wintertime and 20-40 in summer. In those days people would change oil twice a year. That's not necessary at all now and a waste. Remember the former managing director of Castrol (Netherlands) I introduced in a previous post who himself never changed his oil?

I used to use Spectro, but it caused the world economy to collapse. Things are better now that I switched to Rotella.

I did recently switch to DOT4 brake fluid, but then there was an East Coast earthquake. Sorry about that guys!!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Dot4 will gum up your carbs if left in the crankcase too long.  I don't recommend it except as an additive in warm weather ???

Notice how NO ONE talks about DOT5, which by the way makes a great chain lube.

DOT5 doesn't exist!  It's a myth like Big Foot, alien abductions and bi-partisanship!

Delvac 1300 or GTFO!

Seriously, I suggest trying different oils that are made for wet clutch. Find one you like and one the bike likes. Remember, change interval is 1500 miles, or about 4 weeks for me, so I have tried a few.

The Grease Monkey really likes Delvac 1300, shifts like a dream and I can hit neutral every time.

(I topped off last weekend with some Lucas that is really for the Vespa, but I was out of Delvac. Seems to really like that combo, it quieted down some of the chain clatter)

Rotella? Shifting is really heavy, but neutral is easy to find like Delvac (15-40)

Castrol 4T? shifts like crap, can't find neutral. Really clattery too. Expensive compared to Delvac and Rotella that I can get for ~$14 for a gallon at Wally Mart

I suspect that this is all a unique combo of wear, oil pump effectiveness, and "personality" that these bikes exude. They are all unique... like little snowflakes.  ::)

So run a few different brands through the bike, see what feels the best.

Then use that.
