77k finally done but one problem
« on: February 23, 2014, 05:51:49 PM »
Hi Everyone. Finally got my 77 750k finished. It was taken completley apart, frame painted, everything, cleaned
or painted or replaced. Tank and sidecovers are original paint. I installed new rings, did the valves and tensioners. It has a leak
coming from under valve cover under breather. I pulled out valve cover bolts and raised up the valve cover(about a 1.5'' until it stops). the gasket around the hole(arrow) by breather didn't line up good when installed and has a piece missing from the side
were the screw took it off when tightening.  Question is can i wipe it down good while I have the cover wedged up and put a gasket sealer right were some of it is missing and put it back down or am I going to have to pull the motor to put in a new gasket.
It runs super and will probably sell to get an earlier model. It is sitting by my 75 I redone. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

katman ; I've heard that it is possible to snake a new gasket in place if you've got the patience ! That being said, I've not done it.  Good luck !!    ...cougar..   P.S. I agree on the nice pair !

You can check the valve cover gasket on a 750 without removing the motor. I've done it several times. If you take out the valve cover screws you can get just enough clearance to work a new gasket in there. One thing to be aware of, which you kinda have an inkling about already. The valve cover gasket is NOT symmetrical. The middle section leans a little. You have to have the gasket oriented correctly or it will leak,.

Thanks Patrick,
I think I am going to try and snake a new one in. I'll take my time. You have done it right.

I've done it a few times,  Katman. It is not difficult.  The only issue comes if the valve cover has never been removed before.  Then the valve cover can be stuck on by the old gasket.  That can cause problems removing all the residue of the old gasket. Since you he motor has been apart already,  that should not be an issue.  Go slowly.

Yeah,
I got all the bolts out now, and the cover is free. Old gasket is there on the head and free. I'll give it a shot.
