What to do about one bent spoke?
« on: September 27, 2011, 05:33:12 AM »
So, I had a little incident on the road last night (see: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=96302.0), and could use some advice...   I thought it was two, but just one spoke in my rear wheel is bent.  It doesn't seem to have thrown it too much out of true, just visually spinning the wheel, but the spoke is bent to the point it feels loose.

Is there any way to bend it back, or are we talking a new spoke, and removing the tire I just had mounted on Friday?

I think you spent a lot of your luck  already, I would replace the spoke.

I hear that!  It's not really a big deal to replace it, actually.  Just $20 to take the tire off and another $20 to put it back on...

Depends on the bend, and if it has accompanying nicks or gouges.  A minor bend I would straighten and tighten the spoke back up.  Nicks cause cracks and breaks, replace.

If it is bent and loose, is the hole in the rim ok?  Has the hole in the rim expanded as the spoke was attempting to be ripped out?

Just me thinking is all.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Just bent and loose.  I was able to knock it back almost straight and tighten it.  Haven't checked for true yet with my dial gauge, but I will later.
