Landspeed record turbo Honda 998cc.
« on: September 27, 2011, 12:21:12 PM »
Just rebuilt after 26 years in boxes my CB750K2 is back to it's original condition.
Performance in 1981.
Top speed 207 mph.
Flying quarter mile 198.98 mph.
FIM 1000cc World flying kilometer record ( 189.64 mph)
FIM 1000cc World flying mile record (181.51 mph on public road)
Irish Landspeed record ( flying kilo, 184.10 mph - public road.)

Built on a budget the frame is a Rob North design, by Piper, the original Peter Williams mag wheels from a works Norton,
Triumph Bonneville front forks, koni's on rear, Lockheed calipers with Renault discs, vertex mag with drive built by Phil Joy from VW beetle distributor gears, modified ATP turbo kit, fairing based on modified design of Garelli or Benelli 1950's dustbin, home built water/alcohol injection.

This bike gave lots of fun. Click for photos:      http:/www.filckr.com/photos/nitrous2000

Were some of those records set at Elvington?
Bit of a snag with the link - it doesn't work. I also tried a copy and paste to the task bar, but just got the Flickr home page.

Yes, the Flying Kilo record was at Elvington, England in October 1981. The others were on the Carrigrohane Straight, on the edge of Cork City, Ireland, in  July 1981.

Try my best to fix the pics.

Good luck.

Dodger you mentioned that you were also using water and alcohol injection on you record setting bike. How and where did you inject? Did you have different injection ratios based on fuel as well as track conditions? If I understood you correctly, the main reason for the injection was due to Fuel Octane ratings being to low for your application? It's main purpose was to prevent pre-ignition and detonation? I imagine the cooling effects were also noticeable even though I have no experience with water injection. This is something I would like to consider on my next build. Thank you in advance.

Hi rklystrom,
The injection is well worth while if you are running long distances on boost. Even with today's racing fuels, I am sure that it will still help due to the cooling effect. I injected through the side of the front of the carb using a presurised tank, from the intake manifold and a pressure valve which can be set to come on at the required boost.

Wow that's a clean looking machine. Very nice!
With a top speed of 207 what was the gearing, and how much boost did it take?

Hi Nitrohunter,

The gearing was 17/32 with an 18" rear wheel and a 150 Dunlop racing slick. Theoretically this was to give 209 mph @ 9000 rpm It ran 207mph at somewhere around 9000 ( don't know exactly as I was too interested in where I was going and the needle was bouncing). No Racepak then. Boost was 15 psi. That was the max that it would go at long distance without detonation.

Apart from up the road for fun, no plans to run it again at present. It feels just as good as ever though.

Good luck

Hi Jaguar,

I have run the bike in many differn't specs. Started off with it as my road bike, with lights and a half fairing. Ran it normally aspirated in 750 form. Used it in sprints and made 152 mph (at 12,000 rpm - not to be recommended for long) with a piper race cam and exhaust and the head polished ( 28mm carbs, as far as I remember) 12.1 compression.

Then I took it up to 998 cc ( new pistons and liners, using a 750 block bored out and the crankcases bored to match). 2mm oversize stainless inlet valves were installed ( standard exhaust valves), S&S race valve springs and the head flowed to match.

Result, 161mph with the half fairing at the end of a kilometer. Used the bike in this form for 2 road races and then sat on a wall to watch Irish landspeed records being set by Danny Keany, OWOI 750cc works Yamaha ( 167 mph) and by Vivian Candy in an Arrows F1 car ( 169 mph).

Felt that I could do better than that and then got serious.

The concept was to keep the weight down, have very efficient streamlining and produce more firepower than anything else running in my country at the time and run it all on a low budget. The only way to go was turbo (modified ATP Rajay FF40) and why not add nitrous for good luck as well? ( In reality the nitrous never worked out. At about 190mph I used to hit the button but the clutch always slipped. A 2 extra plate racing clutch, the best available then, was used but, no good with the nitrous. A nice lock up would have been the thing to have but, not available then.

The streamlining proved efficient and it ran 165 - 166 with no boost ( about 80 BHP). Compression 9:1.

I will post some shots of the internals and the mechanics in the near future. If you have specific questions - just ask.

Good luck.

Careful Mel, you'll be getting the bug again, Oh, I do hope so. Perchance you might like to join Straightliners / UK Landspeed Racing Association at Elvington for one of the top speed days. You would be very welcome.
