Need help on CB750 Exhaust
« on: September 22, 2011, 05:41:35 PM »
Hi Guys,

Newbie here just looking for some guidance. Looking to upgrade my exhaust to a 4-1. Heres the sound Im really kind of going for. It looks like in all three videos, the exhausts are skinnier. I cant seem to find any exhaust with skinnier header/exhaust tip combo like these. Let me know opinions and if you know what kind of exhausts they are running. Sorry for these videos as its the only way to describe the sound that i am looking for.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Yea i really like that tone but dont know where to get an exhaust like that. The first one in another country looks like a regular mass produced muffler. If someone knew of a place to get my hands on one of these that would be much appreciated.

I agree, that exhaust posted looks homemade.   If you really like that sound (it's what my bike sounds like, but it's VERY loud), then I suggest looking into a set of drag pipes.

My kerker made that same deafening sound when the baffle shot out. neighbors hated me, cops loved me (well at least they wouldn't leave me alone) i added a mac baffle (made for the kerker) and now it sounds very similar, but a couple decibels quieter. Though i do still get people that refuse to ride behind me do to the decibel level...

Go onto carpy's site and listen to his Yoshimura replica's, it is probably the best sounding pipe around and good for performance as well....

@Retro Rocket,

Carpy has awesome pipes that sound really good... just nothing like the videos i posted at the top to go check out for examples of what i want. I may have to settle for something like that if i cant find what im looking for. Thanks for the help on that.

Would a 4-1 mac header, then a skinny/small aftermarket muffler tip, get me near the sound im looking for?

Im assuming the muffler tips shape and the baffle inside are the things that really change the sound in a bike correct?

Personally, I think the sound you're looking for can be had with a set of drag pipes.  The problem for me is that my bike is SO low, that I no longer have an option to run anything underneath it.  Eventually, I'll make my own exhaust, and I'll model it after something similar to this.  The good thing is that those *should* be long enough to not have to re-jet the carbs, but every bike is different.

on the edit: if you need/want something that has a megaphone on the end of it, I can't really help much other than whatever it is, it'll have to have no baffles.  I'm more of a low and loud kind of guy, and from what I'm finding out, doesn't make me fit in real well around here, lol.

Yes , also the diameter of the pipes, the collector and even the length of the muffler end of the pipe will alter the sound.

I am not big on the mac pipes but they are relatively cheap so if you want to modify anything the mac would be a good start

@chopped, ill definitely keep my options open with those drag pipes.. sitting super low under the bike tho doesnt make me want to look in that direction

@retro rocket, Thanks for that info. Yea everyone says that MAC pipes are cheap quality but i obviously have had no experience.

I found this video on the internet yesterday and i think most of you guys will have a better idea of this setup. Do you know what headers these are and the exhaust tip attached? This is also something i would like..

They'd be more than fine on an unaltered bike, but mine is really low.  I only have 3 or 4 inches from the ground to my oil pan.  They'd look really good on a normal bike.

They look similar to Carpy's original pipes {he no longer has them} , still very close to the Yoshi pipes i mentioned earlier.....

I have a mac 4-1, not because I chose it, but it came with my bike when I originally bought it. The stock mac can is really quiet, so I build these small cans for the 2.5" pipe. I think it sounds similar to the videos above.

Here's a couple of older vids.

yours sounds good, but that other bike above is quite a bit louder and raspier.

Just to clear things up a bit, drag pipes {4 into 4} sound nothing like a 4 into 1.....

@Johnny5, Your bike sounds great man! but i agree with @chopped550 that i would want it to have a bit more growl, then again it could just be the video and we aren't hearing the real thing. None the less those are all good options. Do you guys recommend a Mac 4-1 like johnny5 has in his video, and Carpys exhaust tip "The Scorcher", to throw on the end?

Whats so bad about the MAC? rust easy? wears faster? doesnt sound good? etc..
