Best jet source
« on: May 12, 2006, 04:24:17 PM »
I am looking for new slightly larger jets for my 1980 cb650C, I believe mine are stock, but I dont know how to check.  I'd like to go just one size larger, but I dont know a good place to get them.

I have looked at a few websites, but they are confusing and I dont know what I am looking for.
Any suggestions?

I've ordered some jets from http://www.rageperformance.com/carburetorparts.asp - I'm not sure if they have what you need.  I emailed with one of the person, ended up taking digital photos of my slow jets, and from the photo he was able to match the jets up with his stock and sent out the size I needed.  Real helpful guy, I think Jeremy was his name.

Wired:

I just talked to this guy at motorcyclecarbs.com yesterday about ordering some jets.

You and I have the same bike.  I beleive my current (I think stock) is a 95.

The guy is kind of a dick:  the few times I've called he didn't seem very interested in talking to me, but when I pressed him for help (the second time I called) he gave me some info along with the attitude.

I'm using their guesstimate article to get an idea what I need.

2 main sizes for 4 to 1 pipe
1 for K&N filter

=3 main sizes.  Plus one size up on the pilot (which will be a pain in the ass -- press-in)

After he gave me the info he says "so now I helped your gonna buy from me, right?"

No big deal, but if you don't want to talk to people then don't advertise on your site that you can offer expert advice.

Now, my plan is to buy the target size of the mains, plus one size above and one below, plus a bag of shims for needle fine adjustment (oh the joy).

And, now that I think of all the carb removing that I'll have to do might as well go with the pod filters so it'll be easy to put the carbs in and out.

Since my exhaust is toast, I gotta go to 4to1 and rejet, so at that point why hold back?

out,

Zeke

My bike has 4-2 pipes of unknown origin, likely not top end performance though.  Like I said, it works well, just seems like it could use less hesitation upto 3k.  There is a noticeable slight loss of power when I put the choke in, most noticeable at highway speeds.  This happens when the choke is far enough out that it doesnt affect the idle which is very good when warm.

This bike starts up very easily (except when I accidently hit the cutoff switch) and idles very well, I am just afraid that I may be doing unnecessary damage to my valves by running lean.

I emailed the guy at motorcyclecarbs.com, and you are right, he is a jack@$$.  His basic reply (paraphrased) was "Look around the website, you'll figure it out.  I think I'll just go with a DynoJet kit.

If you can pull a jet and look closely on the side or the top - you should see the jet size.

I'd try the guy at http://www.rageperformance.com/carburetorparts.asp  The selection looks similar to that at the other site listed, however the guy I spoke with at Rage was extremely helpful.  And, I got the jets in good time (less than a week I think).

Turns out, I dont need jets after all, someone asked me if I had adjusted the idle mixture, and I did, but I was going through the Clymers manual and it said that any screws other than the originals should be turned out 2 1/8 turns instead of 1 1/2, so I tried that, and the bike works much much better now, but the wind was horrible today and I got blowed all over the place.

regarding motorcyclecarbs.com.  I think he is better with Yamaha triples and the like.  I did order jets from him once based on the "look around the site" method he advocated but didn't get the right ones.  I never bothered to return them or ask for a refund since I chose the ones I thought I needed.  I do have a spare jet or two that I may send him along with the incorrect version I bought just so he can see what the SOHC Hondas use.  With the right education he might become a good Honda guy.  I don't plan to send them until I finish tuning though so it could be a while.
