Are REPOP Tappet Covers Ok?
« on: September 29, 2011, 07:29:54 AM »
Looking to replace the chromed finned ones that came with the bike.

I found a set of 8 on Ebay for $50. The seller has informed me that they are repop. I've already had one bad experience purchasing parts for my CB on ebay and I'd like to avoid another.

Is there anything I should be leary of? Also do I need to do anything special when installing them? or do they just screw on?

Those look OK. Maybe put a little light lube on the o-ring and do not over tighten them.

The hreads can be rough. They also contain a lot of zinc which makes them difficukt to polish (if that is the look you are after.

Anything is better than those chrome finned monstrosities. I'm fine with the finish. The bike isn't concourse but she photographs well and is a solid runner.

Those are still available from Honda fo $6.90 each = $55.20. No questions asked. You'd need some ORIngs I supose. Hardware items should be cheap.

If you posted a classified, I'll bet you'd get someone to trade you the chrome finned ones for stockers.

No kidding! I'd rather order from Honda. I'm ordering a complete gasket set from CycleX so I can use the ones from there. Where did you get that $6.90 price?

Don't know if that link is the exact page or not. If not, navigate around to find the "cylinder head cover". My favorite OEM supplier, but others are just as good or better.

I got my gaskets from CycleX as well, you're right the ORings are in there.

I have been looking for tappet covers also and found a less expensive set, however they don't include the o-rings.  See http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270665019882&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 - only $25.

Thailand? Did you buy them? are you sure they're on the up and up?

Thanks!

My 2ยข: With 5000+ transactions they are likely fine. But my personal criteria on ebay is for 99% positive feedback.

I ordered some grips from an outfit in China, off ebay. Got them quickly (10days) no problem. But the distance and variables cause concern, you'd want to be prepared to wait.

I haven't yet purchased them.  It is one of those low priority, nice to have, type of want rather than a true need.  I too am somewhat leary of the Thailand, Vietnam, and China suppliers but often a price decision can override my doubts.  This would be one of those decisions in which I would have to consider whether the price savings is worth the risk of a bad purchase.  And, I really hate making decisions.

FWIW.... I have had decent luck hitting the local (Within 50 miles) bike junk yards. I had a tappet cover that was stripped by the PO and went o a junk yard and found 4 that were in decent shape. Polished those bad boys up and so far so good...
I paid the guy a whole $5 for four of them.

There are ZERO bike salvage yards in New Jersey. The closest one I know of is in Baltimore MD.
