1982 CB 650 SC Swingarm Bushings... Anyone ever changed them?

When I first bought this bike 4 years ago, the mechanic doing the safety inspection said the swing arm bushings were getting close to the limit but they would pass. I had a look with the rear wheel off (another story) and notice there is about a 1/4 inch or more of play moving the swing arm side to side. I took it all apart and it was not that the nut on the end of the long shaft through the swingarm was too loose. I had to put a 3 foot piece of pipe on the end of the ratchet to get it off!!

Anyway the bushings look like they are pressed into the arm itself. My Haynes book says there should be no free play in the arm so I'm guessing they need to be driven out and replaced.

Any ideas about:
-inspection for wear
-how to get them out the easiest way
-anything else, pictures etc.

What state is the collar in ? Thats the long steel tube inside the bushings . Honda sells bushings made out of steel ( looks like the one in your pic ) . Steel on steel Wears out quickly . Some of the after market sellers sell bronze bushings . Try Z1 enterprises , Partsnmore , there are lots of sellers in the FAQ under :

Try a PM to Hondaman . He does a swingarm refub service . Don't know if he does 650's though . I wouldn't go with steel bushings . You'll have to do it again in about 5000 miles .

The collar is the long hollow removal tube inside the bushings and the swing arm? It looks fine.

The pic is of the OEM bushings which are steel yes I think, I haven't ordered any yet. I just want to get the bike ready for a safety check as we are selling it.

I'll check out Parts N More as I've ordered from them before.

Gday there, New to the forum and this is my first post in an attempt to be helpful. A good way to test for wear is to kick the bike up onto the centrestand and get the rear wheel up, grab the swingarm with both hands and try to move it side to side. If there is ANY movement whatsoever the bushings need replacing, if no movement then they are good to go. If you do replace with the factory specs nylon-plastic ones be vehwy vehwy gentle as they will split and crack and do all sorts if you hammer them in too hard. I would suggest getting the steel ones and making sure you grease it like theres no tomorrow. Worn bushings are the sneakiest of handling killing ailments, mine felt like a new bike when i replaced them on my cb650z.

Yeah as I mentioned above there is at least 1/4 inch of play. I called my Honda dealer here and I ordered the LAST 2 bushings in Canada. Once they are gone they are discontinued here!!! This is another reason I need to sell this bike as parts are getting harder to get.

Anyway, it looks like they have to be driven out from the inside. Any ideas on what t use?

-round piece of wood?
-small piece of steel bar?

Parts N More did not have them listed so I had to get OEM ones which I think are steel. I have lots of good Honda Moly 60 paste that I might use a bit of it on. There is a grease fitting on the swingarm to load them up with grease as well.

What u going to ask for it?     I'm sure  someone here can make them for you and others.   I could if I had more run of the shop but its a new job.   Oil lite is the best to make bushings out of.  Its a oil impregnated bronze.

I have to ask a lot for the bike to try and recoup some costs. Not decided yet but I know it will not be easy getting what I need.

Boy, your safety inspections up there are really tough!



Jeez, down here all they do is beep the horn and flash the lights!

Long steel pole, slide it through the swingarm and catch the edge of the bushing. Hammer it bit at time changing where you hit the bushing each time.  Be careful though, you don't want to gouge the inner sleeve.  Make sure you grease everything thoroughly on reassembly. Last two!  A little sad methinks, want to see more Companies support older bikes with aftermarket parts
