Gordon Lightfoot LIVE 9/28/2011
« on: September 29, 2011, 06:30:08 PM »
After years of wanting to see Gordon Lightfoot I finally got to last night. Show was great. The guy is a legend and still going at it at 73. I love all the standards but I was really hoping he played Did She Mention My Name. I really like this early song from him and he doesn't always play it. He opened the show with it and followed with Carefree Highway.

Perfect start to a great performance.

Agreed, lots of the 70s went by with him playing in the background. I think...  ;)

Saw him a few times back in the 70's and 80's.  Wonderful story teller who puts on a great show.

Did he play the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald?

You might want to update that thread title.  :D

That's what I thought too. Glad I was wrong , I've never got to see him.  "If you could read my mind" is one of my favorite songs.

Yea for sure, you might start another rumour.  We had one about a year & a half ago about his "death" on a Toronto radio staion (he had been suffering from some serious heart issue) & it started taking off in the media until HE had to call the station himself & put it to rest.

Nice clip there. Sounds like he did a good show. I imagine some of those singers from the 70's wonder what kind of a reception they will get from their fans. I mean the fans can not expect the exact same sound as the "early years." But I admit I thought he did a nice job in the clip and thanks for sharing it. Sounds like the fans like it from the applause.

If you watch the end of the clip you see him walk over to the bass player and say something. It was something like "that one was really good". You can see him even sort of savor it at the end. He took a few moments to get to the next song.

The audience was into it all evening. I'm 50 and I'd say that the majority of people there were as old or older than I am. Younger people are really missing out.

Aint that the truth. We have a radio station here that plays decent music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I find myself listening to more and more. I have to think about what decent music has come out in the past 10 years and I don't come up with much. Maybe Death Cab for Cutie.

My Favorite Gordon Lightfoot song...

I still remember it playing all summer back in '74.

A little tidbit from Wikipedia:

"Sundown" was inspired by his then girlfriend, Cathy Smith, later more infamously known for her involvement in the death of John Belushi. Lightfoot has commented in interviews that she was "the one woman in my life who most hurt me."
