750K6 front sprocket play and noisy gear box.
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:05:18 PM »
On the road, stopped at my brothers. Last couple hundred miles getting noise from the gear box. The front sprocket has 1/8" or more play when doing a push/pull at 9 and 3 o'clock(analog). Is this normal? Might have to abort!

Don't abort or jump off yet, give away or sell for 1 dollar. Play in the front sprocket is normal. The gearbox can have a slight whine when down the road and under load but not loud. Here are some questions for us and the folks.
How long have you owned the bike?
76K 750 and how many miles?
Condition of the sprockets or drive train.
Picture or any other background info.

Sorry about my earlier post. Kind of freakin out there!
A little backstory, bought the bike in Cleveland in May. 37000 miles on it. Pretty good shape at first go. Knew the mufflers were shot. Have replaced those. Also done...
Fork Oil.
Cleaned and di-electric lubed electric connections
Rebuilt ignition and start switches.
Replaced fuse block.
Installed Hondaman ignition.
General tuneup. - valves, plugs, points, oil.
In adjusting the chain I discovered the chain had failed at some point earlier. There is damage to the rear sprocket cover and repaired damage to the front drive sprocket cover. It's been hammered back into shape, rewelded and sanded to very close to original.
I put about a 1000 miles on it this summer around Cleveland.
Haven't had any trouble with drive chain during this time. Tuesday I loaded my gear to head back to Texas via Charlotte, NC.  Within the first 100 miles I'm hearing a tick sound from around the trans area. By 250 I'm hearing a Tock-Tock from there. I'd adjusted the chain on the road. The last 100 miles it's sounds bad, a grinding metal on metal noise. Expensive. I'm just trying to stay steady and make it to my brothers house.

So at this point I've got it in my brothers garage and trying to decide what to do. I realize I cant describe the noises I'm hearing adequately , This is my first 750 and am kind of flying blind here.
Where do I start? I've run the engine with the chain off and spun the rear wheel disconnected and haven't heard anything bad. Tomorrow going to drain the oil and look for shavings.
How do I isolate this?
Thanks for every body's time
Steve

Well, drained the oil yesterday and did find some little sparkles and two 1/4" long steel hairs. Like the edge of metal being knocked off. This oil was only 550 miles old.  Also pulled the clutch shift cover off, nothing abnormal looking there. Refilled with oil and ran again. Noise is prominent in 3rd and above gears. Stetha-scoped the gearbox and is definitly  coming from there.
In reading the forums it sounds like quit a few other folks have had similar drive train problems.

I'm having to abort the road trip back to Austin. Luckily my brother is driving down at christmas and can haul the bike down then.
So, back on the 360t till christmas and then I'll be cracking the case. I'll be perusing the forum for all the info I can find.
Thanks guys!
