Removing Exhaust
« on: May 13, 2006, 03:33:49 AM »
What is the best way to remove the 4 into 1 exhaust?  Take it off in one whole piece or
split the Header/Muffler...

Thx....Jim

Jim,

Take off the muffler first.

You will lhave to take it off anyway, when you loosen the headers from the engine they can swivel down and up, and side to side to work them off, but with the muffler still attached you leave yourself little movement and more weight to push or pull around.

whats the reason for pulling the exhaust off or is it just a question? :)

I'm putting the bike on a  motorcycle lift. And as verified by another post on this board you have to take it
off. So are you saying separate the two parts before disconnecting header?

Looks like the clamp has one hex head bolt and one that has a round head, looks odd but seems to be original.

Well I couldn't loosen the clamp holding the muffler on so I took the thing off in one piece. Thinking it would
be easier to get back on in two parts I tried separating the muffler from header on the bench. But as soon as
I applied a little torque to the muffler to try and loosen it (I had the header clamped down to the bench) a small
crack appeared in the muffler 2-3 inches from the clamp. So I will leave it be and probably struggle trying to get it
back on in one piece...

mate i have an F1,you should be able to remove i think its #1 and #3 header pipes?... then that gives you a bit more movement when it comes to taking it off, yeah i know the bolt you are talking about, i dunno why honda did that, but its a PITA!!!, you wont be able to remove the muffler from the header pipes, its sorta held in by a ridge on the muffler, and a lip on the clamp, sorry i didnt see this earlier, would have saved a crack.. appologies... Let us know if you need any other help...peace

you will find it easier to put the separate pipes on after you get the attatched pipes, and muffler on, they slip straight on... peace mate..

Jim,

My apologies for giving you the wrong advice, I was using my bike as a reference, in that it has 4 to 1 header and slip on/bolt on muffler.

did not realize yours was an original F1 4 to 1 with the collector box on it..

I looked at the F1 parts manual today, which shows what cben advised, that the original is a PITA..

hope you can repair the crack without too much trouble.. :-[ :-[ :-[

750goes,

No problem.  Guess I should have waited awhile before trying to separate the two parts.. Now I know better..
We'll see what happens with the crack when I get it back together..........Jim

Well guys I got everything back together and sure enough the small crack I created in the muffler
is leaking. I'm thinking of trying muffler repair tape, anyone ever use this stuff or any other product?

thx..Jim

sorry m8 havent had any experience with the stuff, i ended up hangin my standard system in the shed full of oil, and bought a new system here in OZ, for 500 AUD... very hard to get the systems now... so will leave mine for when i restore the F1, someone here would be able to help out, though i see no reason why muffler tape wouldnt work.... let us know how you go..peace

If you can't weld the crack then at least drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it from cracking further.
