NAME YOUR 3 HEROES OF THE SOHC4 RELAY AND WHY
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:13:46 PM »
Just as it says.

My 3 heroes are in order:

1. G O D Z I L L A - He united us all for a common cause other than the bikes. Brotherhood! This was mostly previously lacking IMO.

2. Ofreen aka my new friend Greg. do do do, do do do do do do do he is IRON MAN. Can't say enough about his contribution of his love of riding and all things SOHC4. Did I mention something about ~ 3500 miles!  ;D

3. SCondon aka Sean - a true gentleman and great rider that I had the opportunity to meet and ride with a few years back. Thanks for introducing me to the NorCal coast dude! WOW! And thanks for bailing out Team AZ and Team CA when things started to get desperate.

4. Special shout out  ;) Yeah I know I said 3 but the one man that bailed my ass out when my bike wouldn't be ready and let me ride a loaner for 2,200+ miles - none other than CB650 aka Terry. Eternally grateful dude! Totally amazing that he made the Utah, Colorado, Kansas legs happen!

My three heroes:
CBGhia. When no one else was available to pick up GZ at the TX/OK border, he stepped up to the plate at the last minute. He also escorted GZ across a great amount of TX.

jcarthel. He picked up GZ from CB, and carried him solo across the rest of TX, and damn near all of NM.

SCondon. He left NorCal at dawn, and picked up GZ at 29 Palms the same day.

These three riders got us through some very difficult sections. Without them, the relay would not have made it past the South West.

No fair limiting us to three!

* Team Southwest and Team West covered some vast expanses with just a few long haul riders. CBGhia, jcartel, and SCondon provided crucial links.
* ofreen got to ride in TWO portions of the relay! How dedicated cool is that? WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
* What about those off their noggin riders from Team Central Rockies that had to cross snow-covered Rockies in the freezing rain and sleet? I shivered reading those ride reports!
* Team Southeast Coastal had a couple of desolate legs covered by some determined riders, especially through WV. cvillechopper pulled a 17 hour marathon which garners honorable mention!
* Team South rode through torrential rains while dodging tornados!
* Team Northern was split between two different trans continental passes if I'm not mistaken...
* Teams Central, Mid-Atlantic, and New England had no shortage of input and did an excellent job of bringing it all together. I was having trouble keeping up at one point.
* Team Eastern Canada and Team Michigan were back to covering large expanses of real estate with the added wrinkle of border crossings!
* Then Team Pacific Northwest wraps it up in grand fashion, and we're back to ofreen!

I might need three picks for EACH TEAM!
TAMTF...

Not to take anything away from Jerry, because without his willingness to take this project on and meticulously plan the whole thing, it wouldn't of happened. But, didn't the idea originate with Myles aka MyCB750K6? There's no doubt that one of those three spots belongs to Jerry, but shouldn't we give credit where credit is due? Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe this is where it all started....

Schmthaus does have a point. I happened across a thought from Myles that popped up in a totally unrelated topic after I got back from my Key West ride . Without rereading the topic, 2 of the guys were bantering about taking a ride "like the old days" but "we all wouldn't be able to get together in one location". It grew in my mind from this. Thank you Myles for getting my old brain wheels turning   :)

Has anyone heard from Myles lately? He's kinda dissappeared from the scene and wasn't able to participate in the Relay after helping with the Team California planning.

It appears nomad first described what the relay actually became, and Schmithaus suggested GZ.

Jerry deserves all the credit for picking up the ball and running with it.  He made it happen.  I doubt it would have without your efforts, Jerry.  Then there was yours and your teams' most excellent effort to get to our rendezvous at Spanish Fork, with you on a bike that a little problematic.  I doubt you guys will forget that experience.

There were several guys who stepped up and did extended solo rides to keep the relay going, sometimes through difficult conditions.  They all deserve a shout-out.

This was truly a team effort and a remarkable one.  I commented to Jerry awhile back that it was great that people are willing (and able) to take extended trips on 30-40 year old motorcycles that the manufacturer never intended to be in service for so long in such great numbers.  Honda should be proud and it is a shame that they have apparently taken no notice.

Thanks to everyone who has been complimentary about my rides.  I appreciate it.  But what is cool to me is that I wasn't alone in this by a long shot.

Jerry, thanks again for your generosity.  See you on the road.

How about if each team coordinator picks their own 3 Most Valuable Players?

It would be a good thing to acknowledge those whose solo efforts kept the relay going.  In the PNW area Killer Canary, Kap384, and Mickey6 would be at the top of that list.

Should this thread be in the Relay forum?

Gotta give Wilbur a big High Five for getting the thing started and riding most of the way from Daytona to Savannah alone.

Also...........Vern and Travis for making the whole trip in a car after both thier bikes crapped out at the last minuet.

Jerry get's some type of "cool but crazy" award for being the creator and spearheading the whole thing!!!!!!!!

What's up for next year?  How are we gonna top this?

Spring is right around the corner.

No fair limiting us to three!

I might need three picks for EACH TEAM!

NO WAY!! There's just NO WAY to limit this to just THREE heros!!  There are the obvious, Jerry, GZ, Greg, yada yada yada.  I don't think I could even name three REGIONS to name as heros.  Team Southeast Coastal and South riding thru tornadoes and ice storms, Team OK, TX & Southwest who pulled it together close to last minute, giving the rest of us all heart attacks, Team Cali who had one huge azz state to cover,  Team Rockies riding thru all sorts of nasty,  Team Central zigzagging to pick up as many riders as possible,  The mean streets of mid-atlantic,  New England with all those syrup slicked roads to ride,  the big box states of Team Northern and PNW!

Even to limit it to three persons per region!  Impossible to name the three heros.  Everyone in Eastern Canada and Michigan did duty above and beyond the call!  From dodging bullets while crawling under the electric fence at the boarder, to roadside repair, to long miles, to pre-planning, to arranging personal vacation to make this happen, to first aid, to awesome photography, to taking the reins when I had to turn back, to opening ones home to persons unknown, to scouting meet-up locations, to taking point thru hostile territory, to the significant others and families who just smiled and nodded as this whacko crew told them they wanted to spend a few days escorting a rubber lizard around the countryside,  to fending off bikini clad hotties in Hell (ok, that really didn't happen, but it could have!  That Redhead looked kinda mean!).

* Team Eastern Canada and Team Michigan were back to covering large expanses of real estate with the added wrinkle of border crossings!

Add to that a language barrier too!!  Were it not for Google Translate, there was a big Provence that could have gone underrepresented!  So should Google Translate be considered a hero?

Merci Raynald, Laricords et le reste de l'équipage du Québec! Ce relais peut ne pas avoir été complété sans votre lien essentiel dans la chaîne!

No, just impossible to limit it to just three!!

My 3 picks (and why):

1) Team Michigan in general but specifically the post Cycle-Moore crew I rode with.  Lots of fun, come really cool bikes, and also for pulling my road rashed @$$ up and off the road.  We should do it again sometime... except for the part where we loose two riders in under two miles!   ;D

2) Fuzzball and his wife for welcoming us into their home (and garage) and because the best nurses are always ready to patch up those in need.

3) Everyone who did their part either by riding, coordinating, providing food or lodgings, route planning, wrenching, or by releasing their significant other to ride with Godzilla!
