carb problems?.
« on: May 13, 2006, 04:57:34 AM »
hello fellas, here's my problem  ???, bike is ko/k1/k2 hybrid fitted with a 78 f1 engine it has not been used for sometime, carbs were full of gunge etc and had a float post broken off and a float pin missing, so i bought another set of carbs and made i good set out of the 2,  stripped them all down and cleaned them with a spray type carb cleaner and blew them out with compressed air and set the float heights to 28 mm, put them back on the bike installed 2 inline filters as my petrol tap has 2 outlets made sure the arrow was pointing the right way for the flow, i am using pod filters and hm341 exhausts, took the bike for a run yesterday and it started ok'ish but would'nt pull gave it choke and it pulled a lot better :-\, during my 5 mile journey i tried knocking the choke off but it just lost power and started coughing and spluttering so i gave it choke and it would pick up and run better but would'nt clear its throat so to speak because it was on full choke, i think i need to pull the carbs off again and give them another clean ? i have read about the yamaha carb cleaner you guys in the states can get is there anything like it in the uk?  cheers mick.

HI Mick,
Okay, first off, you may have a couple things going for you (or against you) here.
#1.) Have you done a full tune up? Check the timing, new plugs, synced the carbs?
#2.) As for your carbs, are they all running the same jetting? Is it stock?
#3.) Did you put o the pod filters and exauhst, or did a PO? (How long have you had the bike?) Both of those may require jetting changes to the carbs for optimum performance

That's all I can thkn off of the top of my head. I'm sure other will pipe in with some good words of wisdom, too.

Good Luck!!

hi kbo2, i have had the bike about a year and the engine in another bike about 2 years but never running for any lenght of time , started it up when i first bought it to see if it ran because i was going to use it as a parts bike since then it has been sat around , i put the pods and exhaust on, as far as i know the jetting is standard but i'm going to check and i am also going to check the needle settings i have checked the timing and put new plugs in but i have'nt balanced the carbs as i have'nt had it running that long, also going to check the retard and advance mechanism , will report back in the next couple of days  ;)  mick.
