Best GSXR1100 engine model for turbo charging?

Anyone know which is the best GSXR1100 model to tune up and fit a turbo charger to? I heard it said that a GSXR1100 K is one of the best but what views do you guys have? I'm toying with the idea of revisiting the 90s and building me a streetfighter :D

you need the lowest compression model available for turbo charging and an intercooler will help plus you must retard the ignition under boost the more boost you put to it the more likely you will need to retard detonation by using alcohol or water injection if you are running 10 to 1 compression you probably can only use 2-4 lbs of boost without water or alcohol injection

I know no first hand info, but I know the drag racers used to like the big  Suzukis because they had roller bearing cranks.

Any 1127cc GSX-R with the old style head, I think they changed the head desing in 1991 or something like that.

If you are gonna REALLY turbocharge it, you gonna lower the compression ratio anyway?
Finns build a lot, and I really mean a lot of turbo GSX-R's, mostly 1216cc.

I know no first hand info, but I know the drag racers used to like the big  Suzukis because they had roller bearing cranks.

        The GSXR 1100 had a plain bearing crankshaft.  The Kawasaki's have the roller bearing crankshaft.

       Here's a pic of my PERSON rebuilt KZ1000 MK2  rollor bearing crankshaft.  Has all the bearings and thrust washers replaced, billit big pin center and has been welded so that the crankshaft pins wont spin under severe loads.

           

           

           

  The GSXR 1300 HAYABUSA also has a plain bearing crankshaft.   ;)

 LOORDMOONPIE,  The 1986-1991 GSXR's were air/oil cooled .  Later models are water cooled, bigger upside down forks, bigger brakes, wheels and tires. Wet weight - 86-91 ( 505 lbs )    1992 up- ( 580 lbs )
 It's a matter of choice and $$$$  on which way to go.  Either way it will be a bad a$$ bike when done !
 It would really be cheeper to find one all ready done and let the builder take the huge loss.   ;)

1216cc GSX-R air/oil-cooled turboengine produces easily over 300hp and can handle it as well.Sounds adequate for a streetfighter to me ;)
How much do you need?
Like I said, any 1127cc or Bandit 1200 engine is good (something about the clutch, but that's not a big deal), just forget about 1991 or later GSX-R's with shim valve adjustment.I even know a 1986 GSX-R 1100 turbo, with a GSX-F engine, runs high 8's and is fully streetable.

1991 they changed the head design (valve adjustment), 1993 watercooling.

I had a cup of coffee with a friend of mine who owns a few GSX-R's.
1990 GSXR 1100, another one with a turbo and a genuine 1989 GSX-R 750R.

Reason you mentioned "K-model" is that's when (1989) Suzuki changed the engine from 1052cc to 1127cc.

Any 1127cc engine, or a Bandit 1200 engine is a good base for this kinda build, in Bandit engine you replace the clutch assembly with a GSX-R unit and you are good to go.

p.s. He also said some not so pretty things about the watercooled GSX-R's, but I'll just say they are not a good idea for this kind of project...

  For really big horsepower with a roller bearing crankshaft you need to use FALCON rods.   ;)

Yeah, Falicon rods are extremely nice but Katana rods can take quite a beating as well ;) They are very different from the stock GS rods.

Never seen a top fuel rod, but some Top methanol funny car rods I've seen, my machinist was the crew chief for a local racer for years.

Actually Mr. Blue... I have a crank laying somewhere in my shop and I knew it isn't a GS crank, wasn't sure if it was from an older 8-valve engine but now that I saw your pics, I'm sure it came from a Kawasaki, so thanks for the info ;)

im new to this site just cause i seen your question. i can tell my drag bikes are all 89-90 1100 turbo with standalone fuel injection. i run the bone stock engine with head studs and valve springs i do not touch the timing either. i run 28 psi on c16 fuel and have never hurt anything but the trans. my bike made just under 400hp at 28psi and has been for about 2 years now. i have another one that is built throughout and it is 550hp as does eric paquette who just broke 250 in the mile with his. these motors bone stock i have seen exceed 425 in the past i say stay at 385 on a stocker and you will have a long life if its tuned rite. there are a few of us that have done alot with these old oilers and believe me we will all tell you they are tough as they come! u can email me for more info if needed. i can tell how to fit a gix1000 multi stage clutch in the 1100 as well. good luck.

ALSO YOU DO NOT NEED TO LOWER THE COMPRESSION AT ALL 10:1 IS GREAT FOR BOOST ON A BIKE WE R NOT TALKIN CARS HERE. ALL MY ENGINES RUN 10:1 AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE STOCK MOTORS. I JUST SOLD A MOTOR THAT I BOOSTED FOR OVER A YEAR THAT HAD 62000 MILES ON AND I HURT THE TRANNY BUT THE MOTOR STILL RAN GREAT EVEN ROD IT BACK TO THE PIT WITH THE HURT TRANNY. THE BANDIT IS 9.5:1 COMPRESSION BUT YOU NEED VALVE SPRINGS AND CLUTCH FOR THE BANDIT.
