CB750 K1/K2 Controls - Rebuild
« on: May 14, 2006, 05:08:26 AM »
I thought once I got the motor, wheels, and exhaust on, the rest of this was going to be easy!
Since I cannot locate any decent replacement controls (handlebar switches) I'm jumping right in and rebuilding mine.
The good part is that since they are mostly metal, this job is more do-able. The bad part is all those %$#@* tiny pieces (springs, screws, rollers). Anywho - the one thing I lack here is any kind of color guide. Wondering what finish the original controls were? Gloss? Semi? Also wondering about the coloring for the stamped lettering? (The ON, OFF stampings for the kill switch and their corresponding dimples, the headlamp and turn-signal stampings)
Hoping someone with either an original example or some OEM style images can help...
Thanks,
Mike V.

I completely disassembled mine and powdercoated them Gloss black

I believe the original was some sort of phosporous coating or maybe anodizing as it was a dull grey.

I would be curios as well as to how the originals were treated as it is not paint.

The best way I can describe them is a matte black with orange lettering.  Now, I'm not sure specifically for your year / model, but I bought brand new ones from Honda for my 550F and that's what they were.

Have you checked with Honda for new ones?  Granted, they're not cheap, but man, they sure look and feel good.

This may help, do a forum search titled "handlebar switch painting question". It has a few suggestions.

I am not certain about the models prior to 74.  But, certainly by then, the bar controls and master cylinder were black anodized and semi-satin finish.  The indented lettering was painted red-going-orange color.

The anodize is a tinted oxide of the parent aluminum.  The sun bleaches the tint to a grey color over time.  And, there may be some sublimation of the oxide that also thins the coating to allow the base aluminum color to show through the aluminum oxide which, in its pure state, is transparent.

The part can be re-anodized in nearly any color you'd like by shops that perform anodizing.

The original color ought to be observed inside the bar controls, the part where the sun don't shine, as the anodizing process occurs over the entire surface of the piece.  However, this internal surface is unlikely to have been polished before anodizing.  And, the showing surfaces most likely were.
