How fast will my cb650 be?
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:52:52 PM »
I bought a CB650 custom that wasn't running due to bad wiring.  Tomorrow it should be brought back to life!  How fast will this bike be?  Its a 1980 CB650 custom.   It has pods, will be rejetted, and has 4-1 open headers.

I have owned a 1968 Harley xlch and a 04 Harley Road King.   I have ridden a buddies Honda Shadow as well.   Will my bike be faster than these other bikes?

It should weigh around 75 pounds lighter than stock.

Here are some before and almost done pics.......

It'll definitely be faster than some, but slower than others.

The stock CB650 did the quarter mile in 13.35 Sec.@ 95.64 MPH.

Given your bike has pods and open headers, it will be slower but sound faster.  (Unless the person who modified it knew more about how the bike should work than just making changes so that looks or sounds faster.)

Then either put it a dyno, or time a quarter mile run.  Then, you will find out if your source is "reputable".
Stock was 50HP @ 9000 RPM.

Very few pod brands are made for increased performance.  Just looks for a cheap price.
Cutting off the mufflers is rookie noise enhancement, mostly to annoy anyone in the vicinity and get them to look at the noise source. (Look at MEEE!.)  I did it too when I was 17.  Lot's of policemen looked at me.  ;D

Phil is right on.  You will smoke a metropolitan scooter and an R1 will make you look silly.
" Why does anyone get offended by what someone does to their own bike? I dont get it. "

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.
Every time any owner strips whatever precious Honda part the horrified purists parts go up in value. That's not the part that bothers them.
What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

My guess is no, it won't be faster.  It'll be loud though, but not sound like a V-twin so I'm not sure how you'll like it.

I'm with TwoTired on this one.  Matter of fact, I kinda want to race you and see what happens...  :)

The Shadow line features motorcycles with a liquid-cooled 52-degree V-twin ranging from 125cc to 1800cc engine displacement.

IF you have the patience to make the engine work with the mods, and know how to drive the bike, it could be faster.
You will have to learn to use the transmission to keep the R's in the power band, as it doesn't make famous torque at low RPM.  You're gonna need ear plugs with those open pipes, or plan to learn sign language in everyday life.

My guess it that you will just want to twist the throttle to scoot, and all the Harley's will walk away doing this same sort of thing.  If you use your left foot right, you can keep up and maybe go around them.  With less weight and prowess you can beat them in a drag race (I did so with a 550 and a slipping clutch).  But, I also didn't admire the Harley guy's riding skill.  He did stop razzing me about my "little" bike, though.  ;D

That's true (to a certain extent), but since you're changing intake and exhaust components without also making internal engine modifications, there is little guarantee that your bike will make even the stock HP, let alone more than that.

it will not be faster than the new shadow but it will be faster than the 250 it will also be faster than an 883 harly but with pods on it you stand a good chance of being beat by a 450 honda nighthawk put the air box back on if you want performance but oh wait you like harly never mind go ahead

My 650 is stock (seriously stock)  ;D and with about 20 kilos of extra junk (screen/siren/lights/ticket box/panniers) it will go to the top of it's speedo range which is 80 miles per hour.
You will obviously get better top speed than that but the 650 was never a quick bike, in fact when I was a teenager, anyone of our group that bought a Honda was thought of as slightly "touched" and scared of going fast....sorry peps but it was all two stroke or nothing in the 70's. ;)
One question about your bike, does it have the mechanical carbs or the CV's?
I had an 82 CB650 (the very very last of the CB650's) and it had CV's and I can tell you the advantage over the old mechanicals is just amazing! :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

twice as long as half of it.

your bike will be fast enough(for an old 650) if you get it running right on the pods, I've never dealt with the CV's so can't help there.

I had a little impromptu drag race between myself on my 650z and a harley sportster the other week, he came up on me on the highway, I was sitting on 100k and he just sat beside me, I just looked over clicked it back a gear and powered on, he dropped back rather quickly and I was pulling away until I backed off when I hit 150, then he went past me and kept going. I have also been out with a mate of mine him on his gl1200 giving it a quick squirt down a back road and we were sitting on just over 160k, so yeah for an old bike they are fairly fast.  It also gives my little brothers turbo MR2 a run for its money. ;D

150 kph equals 93 mph so that would be about right as I can just squeeze 80 mph out of my old girl. ;D

Mine is still winding out quite fast at 160kph, it's just that the bike can go faster than I'm willing to push it because it starts to feel a little unstable and also my helmet is pulling back quite hard at that speed and becomes uncomfortable :(

thanks for the vote of confidence.   i have never been a speed freak.   i do like to go 0-40 pretty fast when safe.  i have never been over 100 mph on a bike and was considering taking it to the strip to see if it will run 12 second 1/4s.

Acually TT is wrong. the 79 ran the 1/4 mile in 12.99 so goes a old report.  And honda claimed 63 hp.  In 80 with the style change and gearing they slowed to 13.3.
No I dont believe any of the #'s as real world but only ideal imposed conditions.

Like I've always heard, it'll go fast enough to kill you. But in all seriousness, it will go fast enough to scare you, so why go any faster? I don't give a toot about a motorcycle that can break 200 mph, cause who has the need to go that fast? Not even professional racers! So why the need for more hp, when the huge majority of street riders won't need it? I would think if you have to ask, it'll probably go fast enough for you.
Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems.
